at the Somerset County Fair tal

ficial reports following the Aug.
28 event
Not only was it a large sale be
cause some 221 market swine
crossed the auction block, but ad
ditionally, 46 market steers and 70
market lambs totaled 337 animals
that were sold during the seven
hour event
Including champions, sales
averaged $1.38 per pound for
steers, $3.23 per pound for lambs,
and $1.72 per pound for swine.

Junior Livestock Sale
Interestingly, fewer than a doz
en animals sold for less than $1 a
pound, according to the sale statis
tician Doyle Paul from Berlin. He
said the bids were consistently
good.
Because the buyers were gener
ous and donated back the animals
they purchased to be resold, the
4-H and FFA Scholarship Fund
will receive some $7,259, Paul
said.
Walker’s Farm Service, owned
by AJ. Walker and his wife Shir
ley, was the premier buyer. Al
ways a strong supporter of the 4-H
and FFA youth, the Walkers paid
$17,899 for 19 animals.

per pound to Laurel Bank. It was
resold for the scholarship fund.
Miller is from Meyersdale.
Gabriel Svonavec, Rockwood,
saw his reserve champion steer
bought by Lincoln Supply and
Equipment Company for $2,925,
or $2.50 per pound.
Walker’s Farm Service pur
chased Shawn Troutman’s coun
ty-bred champion steer for $3,780,
or $3 per pound. The young man
has a Hyndman address.
Jesse Brant of Rockwood had
the reserve champion county-bred
steer that sold for $3,341.25 to
Lean Hogs
