Close Contests Highlight Pa. 4-H Achievement Days
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.)- 1999
Pennsylvania 4-H Achievement Days were conducted
at the end of July, here at Penn State.
In the dairy cattle judging contest, the winning
team m the senior division was York County with
members Rachel Kilgore, Joshua Hushon, and Becky
Kilgore. Following in second was the team from
Franklin County, with members Stacy Goetz, Kyle
Burdette, and Megan Meyers. Placing third through
fifth were Lebanon County (Andrew Ebersole, Michelle
McMichael, Jeremy Mase, Timothy Vail), Crawford
County (Adam Raney, Erin Raney, Nathan
Weiderspahn), and Cumberland County (Aaron
Cornman, Thomas Harwood, and Sonya Rinker). York
also was high reasons team, followed by Franklin and
Lebanon.
Competition was keen among the top 10 senior
individuals. The top two individuals both had 512
points, with Thomas Harwood edging Stacy Goetz for
first place based on the oral reasons tiebraker. The
remainder of the top five included Michelle
McMichael, third; Rachel Kilgore, fourth; and Joshua
Hushon, fifth. They were followed by Becky Kilgore,
Andrew Ebersole, Nathan Weiderspahn, Lauren
Daubert (Clinton County), and Matthew Yoder (Mifflin
County). In reasons, the top five individuals were
Harwood, Goetz, Hushon, Rachel Kilgore, and Becky
Kilgore.
In the junior division, Beaver/Butler emerged as
the first-place team and high team in reasons.
Members were Kevin Caldwell, Nicole Boyle, and
Nathan Schulthies. Indiana’s team of Patrick
McMillen, Keith Pollock, and Johanna Runyan placed
second overall and second in reasons. Kevin Caldwell
edged Marcus Peachey of Mifflin County by one point
to win the individual portion of the contest. Placing
third through 10th were Katie Harwich, Lehigh;
Thomas Ulrich, Washington; Patrick McMillen; Jessica
Bigler, Mifflin; Matthew Litman, Washington; Suzanne
Harwich, Lehigh; Johanna Runyan; and Nicole Boyle.
The Dairy Quiz Bowl also provided spirited compe
tition. In the final match, Berks County defeated
Cumberland County. Members of the Berks Team were
Brandon Treichler, Jill Neiman, Ben Weist, and
Pamela Werley. Cumberland’s members were Amy
Kaucher, Amy Kulick, Jason Nailor, and Daniel
Yeakley. Berks will represent Pennsyvlania at the
North American 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville.
Four Pennsylvania delegates to the National 4-H
Dairy Conference in Madison, Wis. were chosen follow
ing an application process and interviews during 4-H
Achievement Days. Representing the Keystone State
at this event will be Katie Suba, Huntingdon County;
Angela Adams,' Wyoming County; Amy Kulick,
Cumberland County; and Lauren Daubert, Clinton
C.
