SHIPPENSBURG (Cumber
land Co.) A number of youth
who exhibited daily cattle recently
at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds at
the Southcentral District FFA &
4-H Dairy Show qualified for entry
in the state dairy show Sept. 20 in
Harrisburg.
The state district dairy shows
are second level qualifiers for the
state show. Judges at the district
shows select animals deemed
worthy of state competition and
award blue ribbons, regardless of
show placing.
During breed sanctioned and
other shows, the show placings
determine the worthiness of an ani
mal, and placings accrued during
the show season are recognized by
breed associations. For example,
Holstein exhibitors can qualify
their animals for All-American
and All-Pennsylvania honor con
sideration through consistent show
season success.
However, since the quality of
cattle isn’t even throughout the
state, the blue ribbon process for
the youth allows lower placed ani
mals in shows with high competi
tion to qualify for entry in the state
finals, held in conjunction with the
Pennsylvania All-American Dairy
Show at the state Farm Show Com
plex in Harrisburg.
It also allows judges to elimi
nate from state entry those animals
with little competition that place
high in their animal age class.
Depending upon local 4-H
rules, which can prohibit some
youth from qualifying at district
shows if they have not met local
4-H program requirements, youth
are no longer restricted to partici
pating in a district show nearest to
their home, but are free to en ter any
of the district shows held statewide
July through August.
At the Southcentral District
show, youth from Bucks, Cumber
land, Franklin, Huntingdon, Lan
caster, Petty and York counties
participated.
