Correspondent MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) “She’s a good cow,” said Desirae Hillegass after “Locker- Lane Emory Babe,” a senior 3-year-old was named Supreme at the Somerset County Fair’s Dairy Show. Babe was the Holstein breed grand champion. “She’s come a long way,” add ed Hillegass, 20, from Mountain View Farm, Berlin. “This is her fifth show this year and she was grand champion at three.” Out of MJR Blacks tar Emory, Babe’s birth date was December 14, 1995. Wayne E. Schrock, Grantsville, Md. was the breeder. The Pennsylvania State Univer sity junior is majoring in dairy animal science and ag-cducation, but concentrates on the large dairy operation, specifically calves, when classes aren’t in session. Her parents are Doug and De bra Hillegass and brothers are Jus tin and Jared. Hillegass encourages juniors when they first begin to show ani mals not to give up. Hers was a long journey to the top. but she gained experience until showing her first grand champion at age 17. “Pay attention to the registered cows in the herd,” she advises. ‘Try to develop good cows. It takes a lot of time and special treatment” A senior 3-year-old, owned and bred by Philip Petenbrink Garrett, was named Holstein reserve grand champion. Destiny Charles Julie out of Boulet Charles was bom October 28, 1995. Kristi Ann Michael, Meyers dalc, had the Jersey breed grand champion in Italia Farms Fright, Nov. 6,1996 out of Comfort Roy al Alf. She was shown in the Senior 2-year-old class. Angela Poligardo, Meyersdale, was the breeder. The Jersey reserve grand champion was Char-dale Teejay Paula, out of HL Duncan Hill, March 11, 1993. Owner Lance Bittner of Berlin showed her in the six years and older class. Charles D. Johnson, Somerset was the breeder. Meredith Murray’s spring calves, out of Kuszmar Alfairs Othello, were grand and reserve champions in the Milking Short horn breed. Cranapple’s Cherry-Twin was grand, and Cranapple’s Choco late-Twin was reserve. Meredith Murray was the breeder. A summer yearling was the Ayrshire grand champion in Vinc mont Evremonde Emma owned by Eric Murray, Salisbury. Out of Melody-Lane Evre monde, the breeder was Tabb, Lyle and Sons, Inc., Keameys vUle, W. Va. Adam Coleman’s Fall Calf, Colecream Sensation Bea, out of VB Spices Sensation was the Brown Swiss grand champion. Coleman, from Berlin, had the Brown Swiss reserve champion with Four D Trishs Sandy, a 5-year-old out of Top Acres Com bo Preston. Robert D. Door, Ber lin, was the breeder. In the Guernsey breed, Justin Kaufman’s Winter Yearling Just In Henry Elma, out of Solum Grand Henry, was named the grand champion. The breeeder was Elmer M. Yoder, Meyersdale. Kaufman, from Friedens, also had the Guernsey reserve cham pion showed in the Winter Calf Class Just In Loral Lacey - out of Trotacre Mercury Loral. Kauf man was also the breeder. Montgomery County 4-H Dairy Show Held COLLEGEVTLLE (Montgom ery Co.) Fourteen dairy cows with six dairy breeds represented were exhibited at the Montgomery County 4-H Fair in Creamery. Karen Vail of Myerstown judged the cattle for type (body structure) and fitting (how well the animal is groomed). In addition, each 4-H’er was judged on their ability to show their bovine during the contest This year’s supreme champion of die show was a 3-year-old Hol stein, Hallowell’s Jurist Jody, ex hibited by Sean Hallowell of Bechtelsville. An antique gallon milk container representing milk from the supreme champion’s milk was later auctioned off to the top bidder, Freddy Hill Farms of Lansdale for $495 as part of Mont gomery County’s market animal sale. Proceeds from the milk con tainer are split between Sean and the Montgomery County 4-H Dairy Club. The junior supreme champion was a spring calf, Hal lowell’s Patron Blue, exhibited by Amber Hallowell of Bechtelsville. Holsteins exhibited by Sean Hallowell and Amber Hallowell both of Bechtelsville were the Holstein grand champion and re serve grand champion, respective ly. Grand champion for the five colored breeds are as follows: Ayrshire, Kathrine Dunning of Schwenksville; Brown Swiss, Chris McGinnis of Souderton; Guernsey, Amber Hallowell; Jer sey, Chris McGinnis: Milking Shorthorn, Kevin McGinnis. The fitting and showing portion of the dairy show was divided into three classes. Junius (Jr.), ages of 8 to 10, Intermediates (InL) ages 11 to 14, and Seniors (Sr.) ages IS to 18. In the Jr. Fitting, Kathrine Dunning received Jr. Fitting hon ors. For the Int 4-H’ers Amber A senior 3-year-old Holstein owned by Desiree Hlllegass, Berlin, was named Su preme Champion at the Dairy Show of the Somerset County Fair. In the Sr. 4-H class, Chris McGin nis and Sean Hallowell were Ist and 2nd place in the fitting and showmanship contest, respective ly. All participants of thc4-H daily show were required to complete a project book for each animal. The 4-H dairy experience helps teach the basics in how to care for ani mals and the economics involved with raising dairy animals.
