Hundreds
Of Farmers
Headed To
Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. With
the depressed farm economy wor
sening, hundreds of fanners and
ranchers from across the country
will descend on the nation’s capi
tal in September to fight for posi
tive solutions to the farm crisis.
The National Farmers Union
(NFU) grassroots lobbying cam
paign, or legislative fly-in, is set
for Sept. 13-15. The lobbying
push follows months of steadily
declining farm prices for all com
modities and livestock, v'eather
disasters, and other poor market
conditions.
“The fly-in is an opportunity to
take the concerns of farmers and
ranchers straight to the doorstep of
Congress,” said NFU President
Leland Swenson. “This fly-in
couldn’t have come at a more
critical time as Congress prepares
to finish work on a farm relief
package. We will also deliver a
strong message from rural Ameri
ca calling for long-term structural
changes to the farm program.”
Fly-in participants
will visit congressional
offices flora every state,
pushing for short and
long-term solutions to
the crisis in the farm
economy. NFU mem
bers will lobby for key
improvement to a farm
relief package passed by
the Senate just prior to
the August recess.
In addition, partici
pants will tell lawmak
ers the farm program
lacks an adequate safety
net to buffer farmers
during sharp downturns
in prices, and that the
secretary of agriculture
should have mote dis
cretionary authority to
respond to disasters in
agriculture. Participants
will also push for tools
to manage large sup
plies that have driven
down prices, such as a
farmer-owned grain re
serve and a short-term
conservation reserve
program.
Fly-in activities will
also include a briefing
with Agriculture Secre
tary Dan Glickman and
his top deputies on
Monday, Sept. 13.
