A32-Uncaster Farming, Saturday, August 14, 1999 Homebred Hogs Swine Champions At Kutztown Fair ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Fanning Staff KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) It’s something of a rarity these days. Two homebred market hogs were named champion and reserve of the market swine show Tuesday afternoon during the Kutztown Fair, conducted at the fairgrounds. Daiyl Grumbine, swine judge from Lebanon, chose the heavy weight champion hog owned by George Billig and shown by his brother, Daniel, at the swine show. When selecting the hog champ ion of the heavyweight class, Grumbine said the blue butt pig “combines the most positive things.” Grumbine noted the grand champion market hog, from the medium heavyweight class, brings a package to the show ring that is “close to market weight,” Grum bine said, with “a tremendous amount of definition, a good, clean lop, and a hog that moves away and is free in all four comers. It will hang an exceptional carcass.” George, 14, is the son of Tim and Teresa Billig, New Tripoli. The Northwestern High School sophomore was in Washington, D.C. with an exchange student from Japan, noted George’s father, Tim. So George’s brother Daniel, 14, Northwestern Middle School, showed the 222-pound homebred York/Hampshire crossbred nick named “Matilda” by George’s mother, Teresa. John C. Strawbridgc, Whitehall, showed reserve market swine. John, 15, son of Donna Straw bridge, showed a 252-pound Justine Bennecoff won champion Poland China gilt Tuesday at Kutztown. John C. Strawbridge showed reserve champion of the Kutztown Fair Swine Show. Duroc/Spotted crossbred gilt from the heavy heavyweight class, also homebred. John, a sophomore at White Hall High School, noted it was a combination of feeding, breeding, and exercise that garnered the champion. John said he allows the hog to run around in a “playpen” some time every other day, about 10 minutes at a time in the heat and longer when the weather cools. John will be showing at the upcoming Allentown, Sullivan County, Bloomsburg, and York fairs, in addition to the Keystone International Livestock Expo and state Farm Show. Breed champion went to the Duroc February gilt shown by Jared Treichler. The Dunx, “com bines a lot of positive things," said Daryl Grumbine, show judge. The gilt “will suit everyone well in the farrowing crate,” he said, calling the gilt “a long muscle pattern kind of sow.” Jared, 15, Fleetwood, is the son of Sandra Stump and Rodney Treichler. Jared, a Fleetwood High School sophomore, nicknamed the gilt “Ruby” because “I thought it was a good name,” said Jared. “It was a gem.” This was the first supreme champion hog at Kutztown for Jared. He purchased the hog from Howard Parrish, Ohio. There were a total of 105 market swine registered for the show, in addition to 76 breed swine and 35 exhibitors. Following is a list of show placings.
