Better, Groomed 4-Year-Old Rises To Forefront Of FFA Dairy Show
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Fanning Staff
NORTH CORNWALL (Leba
non Co.) Before competition at
the 44th Pennsylvania Southeast
District Junior Dairy Show began
Tuesday morning. Cedar Crest
FFA member and sophomore
Jared Zimmerman, Lebanon,
chose another cow.
Last year's cow didn’t do much
for him. This time, a better cow,
one that "stayed clean in the frees
tall," said Jared, proved magical at
the dairy show Tuesday afternoon
at the Lebanon Fairgrounds.
Jared, 16, son of J. Calvin and
Thelma Zimmerman, Lebanon,
showed a 4-ycar-old, HI-VU
Mountain Loretta (S: Bis-May S
e-L-Mountain-ET, D: Philli-Bey
Bell Louise), bred by Bradford and
Carla Phillips, Bryant Pond,
Maine, to senior and grand champ
ion at the show.
Reserve was presented to Lynet
te Heffner, Robcsonia, Conrad
Wciser FFA member.
Jared Zimmerman works on his
220-head (mostly registered)
Holstein farm in Lebanon.
This time, said Jared, he spent
extra time, walking the cow and
giving better feed, in addition to
hours grooming the animal before
showtime.
"I washed it at home two rimes
before the show began," he said,
clipping and combing it.
Judge Rick Hess, feed consul
tant, said he enjoyed the cow’s
"dairy character and cleanness and
flatness of bone throughout,” in
addition to excellent udder. Both
senior champion and reserve stay
ed in contention throughout, mak
ing it hard for the judge to decide.
Hess said both were nice heifers
with “good balance,” he said. “The
two individuals are nicely
balanced, stylish dairy animals."
This was Jared’s first champion
at the district show. He plans to
show next week at the Lebanon
Fair and, if all works out, at the
upcoming Pennsylvania All
American Dairy Show in
Harrisburg.
Jared noted he would like to
attend Farm Show next year,
something he has not been able to
do.
Lynette J. Heffner, Robesonia,
won reserve overall with her
4-year-old, Fantasyland Charts
Fire-Red (S: Boulet Charies-ET,
D: FAntasyland Skybuck Flint),
bred by Fantasyland Holsteins.
Lynette, daughter of Martha and
David Pool, has finished her fresh
man year at Penn State, where she
majors in food science.
This is the third time she has
won junior champion of the Hols
tein Show, with a fall calf, Fan
tasyland Delaware Cameo
(S:Mansion-Valley Delaware, D;
Fantasyland Sky B Cashmicre),
bred by Lynette.
Lynette, Conrad Weiser FFA,
said that she will be showing at
Kutztown Fair and at the All
American. She shows beef animals
at Farm Show.
Reserve junior champion went
to Timpthy David Vail, Lebanon,
from Cedar Crest, with a summer
yearling, DALEE-BRED Encore
