COLUMBUS, Ohio One of
the dairy industry’s best-known
cooperative leaders have been
selected as the national Dairy
Shrine’s Guest of Honor for
1999.
Thomas L. Lyon, chief execu
tive officer of Cooperative
Resources International in
Shawano, Wisconsin, will receive
the award at the annual ban
quet of National Dairy Shrine
during World Dairy Expo this
fall.
Lyon has been a major player
in the diary cooperative busi
ness since becoming general
manager of Midwest Breeders
Cooperative in 1975.
Under his leadership, the
organization consolidated with
Minnesota Valley Breeders
Association to become 21st
Century Genetics.
The move orchestrated by
Lyon was one of the larger com
plete consolidations in artificial
insemination history, and helped
reduce operating costs for the
two cooperatives by over one
million dollars. 21st Century
Genetics went on to be the first

Dramatic changes in dairying
prompted Lyon to play a major
role in the formation of
Cooperative Resources Interna
tional in 1993.
CRI at the outset was a mem
ber-owned holding cooperative
joining the business functions of
Wisconsin Dairy Herd Improve
ment Cooperative and 21st
Century Genetics in an effort to
control costs and improve ser
vice to farmer members. Two
other AI cooperatives and a live
stock marketing cooperative
have now joined CRI as sub
sidiaries. The organization cur
rently has over 1100 employees
and 60,000 members
In 1994 Lyon worked with
two other Shawano businesses
to form a Child Car Cooperative
at CRI headquarters With a
capacity for 80 children, the first
of its kind center called Kids in
the Kountry is located in a new
facility adjacent to CRI offices.

He is also a former President

of Regents of the University of
Wisconsin and in the Wisconsin
Federation of Cooperatives. He
has also served as a trustee of
both the Cooperative Foundation
and the Graduate Institute of
Cooperative Leadership.
Lyon is a director of M&I
Bank of Shawano, and is
involved with the FFA
Foundation, the Governor’s Task
Force on Wisconsin Steward
ship, National Dairy Shrine, the
Wisconsin Animal Industries
Foundation, and the National
Agricultural, Research, Exten
sion, Education and Economics
Advisory Board. His past activi
ties have included involvement
with 4-H, June Dairy Month,
dairy cattle judging, Rotary, and
his local parish.
