price. Thanks to Lydia Lapp, Cassadaga, N. Y., writes
that it is available in bulk from E&S Sales, 1265 N.
State Rd. 5, Shipshewana, IN 46565. Price is $10.95
for 5 pounds plus shipping.
Thanks to John Bosak, Harrisburg, who writes in
regards to Kamow’s decision to remove tree stumps
with saltpeter here is some facts to know: Stump
holes are filled and replenished with a water and salt
peter solution to permeate the stump and down to the
root itself. This, in itself, does not remove the roots.
It’s the next step that does the job and is often omitted
due process. A fire is built
over the stump to ignite the wood, which then bums
like a punk, down to the roots, depending on the
depth of penetration of the solution. This poses some
danger of fire during a dry season and caution is
advised.
Bosak also writes that saltpeter, KNO3 is used as a
meat preservative, fertilizer explosive, etc. It can be
purchased in chemical supply houses and possibly at
Agway stores for about $17.50 for five pounds.
