PLEASANT GAP (Centre

showing dairy cattle and market
swine and spending time with

In Connelly’s acceptance
speech, she stated, “I am hon
ored to represent such a strong
group of industry leaders in
Centre County. I will do my best
to represent you, the dairy farm
ers well throughout my reign.”
The pageant, led by Master of
Ceremonies John Ishler was
held at the Logan Grange Hall
in Pleasant Gap. The panel of
judges for the evening including
Cheryl Glick of Mifflin County,
Charles Schillings of
Huntingdon County, and Lisa
Shaw of Franklin County, had
their work cut out for them as
all the contestants gave strong
presentations.
Each contestant presented
both a 3-5 minute speech and
skit for the audience. The judges
also held interview sessions
prior to the pageant and each
contestant was given an
impromptu question.
While the judges made their
decision, the 1998 Centre Co.
Dairy Princess, Billie Jo Bird
gave her heartfelt farewell, clos
ing her reign.
As the night came to a close,
the judges named Emily

1999 First Alternate Princess.

In eight days it will be the
fourth of July. Summer is here
with it’s picnics and family gath
erings. Today July 4th does not
create the excitement that it did
when I was a child.
My six sisters and I looked
forward to the fourth as a time
when we could play a little more.
Usually, our parents kept us
very busy either in the kitchen
or in the fields. But on this day,
they allowed us to sit in the tall
grass along the road and shoot
our cap pistols. We imagined we

motorists.

In the evening our 1923
Overland car carried us to a
place called Owl Hill where we
could view the fireworks from a
nearby town. Other cars also
came to view the bursts of light
in the heavens. One evening we
parked along the road as usual
reading, working with animals
and Dairy Bowl. Emily present
ed a speech entitled, “The Dairy
Farmer.” Her skit, accompanied
by stuffed animals and tea sets
was entitled, “Noontime Milk
Party.”
Helping the princesses to pro
mote this year will be a number
of Dairy Maids, Misses and
Ambassadors including Amanda
Gates, Mandee Bierly, Ashley
Bird, Amanda Corl, Rebecca
Cloninger, Courtney Klingler,
Miranda Ullmer, Naomi Ullmer,
Bethany Wasson, Krystal

The evening concluded with
an ice cream social for all to
enjoy.

but apparently too close to a
ditch. You see, when we tried to
go home, we discovered that we
were stuck. As our car was light
weight, several men simply
picked it up and put it on the
road again. Of course, we chil
dren considered this quite an
adventure. However, our father
was embarrassed and angry all
at the same time.
The excitement of the holiday
dims as the years go by. In fact,
our enthusiasm for many holi
days takes on a different mean
ing as we grow older. Christmas
is not a dash downstairs to
check our long brown stockings
hung along the wall. And,
Thanksgiving isn’t a day to visit
Grandparents as they are long
gone. But, with some grandchil
dren living nearby, we can latch
on to a bit of their fervor for the
coming holidays.
