you do that?”
“Of Course I can! I am
Elizabeth Smith, Lancaster
County 4-H Summer Assistant
and today, professional face
painter. I can paint kittens, hors
es and my personal favorite,
cows, with the greatest of ease.
But please don’t ask for a
Pokemon becau. e I’m not really
sure what they look like.
Okay, by this point you are
probably wondering why the 4-H
summer assistant would be out
painting faces, is this really part
of my job?
In a nut shell, yes.
As 4-H summer assistant, it
is my job to go to various 4-H
functions all over Lancaster
County to help coordinate them.
The face painting incident that I
just described took place during
Family Dairy Days at Oregon
Dairy last Wednesday night. 4-H
was asked to help run some of
the various stands for this

event, so there I was, with three
other Lancaster County 4-Hers
painting the face of every child
that came in my line. I never
painted faces before this experi
ence, but I now consider myself a
professional; at least at painting
cows!
As a summer assistant I
never know where my job is
going to take me next. It could
include everything from face
painting to cleaning toilets!
That’s right I said cleaning toi
lets. Last Monday I traveled to
4-H Camp Shehaqua, located in
the Pocono Mountains. Camp
Shehaqua is the destination of
this years’ Lancaster County 4-
H camp, and it was my responsi
bility to travel there to help get
the camp ready for the hundreds
of 4-Hers that will be visiting it
over the summer. As you may
already have guessed, I was
bathroom detail! It was my job,
with the company of my fellow
travelers, to perform the duty of
scrubbing various toilets and
sinks located on the camp
ground. It was hard work, but at

I have to admit that my job
isn’t always this out of the ordi
nary. Most of my 4-H responsi
bilities are in the more normal
category of 4-H events. For
example, last Tuesday night was
Lancaster County’s 4-H
Presentation Night. On this
occasion, I was the official score
keeper.

least no one was around to take
a picture!
What this really means is
that I sat in the hall with my
trusty calculator and tallied up
the scores of the presentations
that the 4-Hers were giving.
Now while this may not have
been quite as glamorous as
cleaning toilets, I must admit it
was a lot cleaner and didn’t
require me to wear rubber
gloves!
Over the course of the sum
mer, I plan to be doing a multi
tude of different things as
Lancaster County’s 4-H
Summer Assistant, and I plan to
take everyone right along with
me!
That’s right, this summer I
will be writing weekly updates
about my toilet-scrubbing, face
painting adventures as
Lancaster’s 4-H summer assis
tant. I predict it’s going to be a
wild and interesting summer, so
sit back and enjoy.
Oh, one more thing, does any
one know what a Pokemon looks
like?
