Att-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 5, 1599 .« Paste Agricultural Museum Coaxing an animal to give up her milk has always been a laborious job. The Mehring Milker, patented in 1895 was an early beginning to mechanize the process. Dr. Jerome K. Pasto, retired curator and associate dean emeritus of the College of Agriculture at Penn State, shows how the machine was pedal-powered. The teat cups were made of solid Bakelite, and a pump to draw the milk created a vacuum. This kind of milker was used for ten to twenty years until improved machines were invented. The Mehring Milker shown here is complete in every detail, and is a rare museum piece. The photo was supplied by the Pasto Agricultural Museum, Penn State University. STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.)
