The South Eastern Middle School “Roadkill” team won the eighth annual York County Middle School Envirothon recently with a total of 356.5 points at the Izaak Walton League grounds near Dallastown. The team, coached by Ralph G Travis included Jason Blevins, Amber Halsted, Jamie Stickley, Shauntel Schlessman, Joshua Grove and Eugene Richardson. The Northern Team I “Rabid Raptors” placed second with 342 points, and “The Catholic Crazies” from York Catholic placed third with 341.5 points. First-place category winners were Northern “Rabid Raptors” for wildlife, “The Catholic cra zies” for forestry, the Northern ‘Rapid Raptors” for current events, and the South Eastern “Roadkill” for aquatics. A total of 16 teams from 10 schools participated. These were Central York, Crossroads, Dover, Northern, Northeastern, South Eastern, St. John Lutheran, St. Joseph School, York Catholic, and the York Home School Association. All students Received a seedling, T-shirt, certificate, and participation ribbons. The top three teams received placement ribbons, plaques, and cash awards for their environmental libraries. Here is a recipe from the brochure, NEW ENGLAND APPLE CHEDDAR BREAD 2/3 cup sugar 2 cups self-rising flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped cashews, walnuts, or pecans 2 eggs slightly beaten 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1/2 cup (1 medium apple) baking apples, peeled and finely chopped. 1/2 cup (2 ounces) sharp Cheddar cheese, grated 1/4 cup milk Preheat oven to 350° E Butter a 9x5-inch loaf pan. In a large bowl combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and nuts. In a separate bowl combine eggs, butter, apples, cheese and milk. Add to sugar mixture. Spread batter into the prepared pan.
