UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) Robert G. Elkin, professor
of animal sciences at Purdue Uni
versity, West Lafayette, Ind., has
accepted the position of head of the
Penn State Poultry Science
Department, announced Tuesday
this week.
In a notice mailed to
faculty and staff of the
Penn State College of
Agricultural Sciences
from the dean’s office,
Elkin will take the posi
tion as head of the
department Aug. 1.
Elkin joined the
faculty at Purdue as an
assistant professor in
1981. He was promoted
to associate professor in
1986 and to professor in
1999. His research has
focused on modification
of avian cholesterol and
lipoprotein metabolism,
and amino acid nutrition
and metabolism in
poultry.
Elkin has authored or
co-authored 51 papers
and 40 abstracts in
refereed scientific jour
nals and has delivered
lectures at numerous
state, national, and
international research
symposia. He has taught
courses in laboratory
techniques, monogastr
ic nutrition, and natural
toxicants in feedstuffs.
Elkin received his
bachelor’s degree in
animal science from
Penn State in 1975, his
master’s degree in non
ruminant nutrition from
Purdue in 1977, and his
doctorate in nutritional
biochemistry, also from
Purdue, in 1981.
He succeeds Michael
Hulet, Penn State asso
ciate professor of poul
try science, who was
Interim department head
since William Weaver
retired in August 1998.
