Cannonball Express
April 30 marks the 99th anniversary of the crash of the
Cannonball Express in 1900 “Casey” Jones (who
was bom John Luther Jones in Kentucky in 1863)
took his nickname from Cayce, Kentucky, where he had
a job at the age of 17 as a telegraph operator In 1888, he
began working for the Illinois Central Railroad as a fire
fighter and soon was promoted to locomotive engineer.
He took the dangerous Cannon
ball Express run from Memphis, / /f@&
Tennessee, to Canton, Missis
sippi, but met with disaster °~^]i
when his speeding locomotive
confronted a stationary freight
train on the tracks In 1903, the
song “Casey Jones" began its popularity
