Back to my trials. My curiosity on
clovers and legumes gave me the in
centive to add a twist to the test plots.
You see, I wanted to evaluate particu
lar varieties of ladino and red clover,
as well as birdsfoot trefoil. Also, I
wanted to leam how they would boost
the ryegrasses as compared to apply
mg commercial fertilizer. So around
the first of March, I took the same area
and cross-seeded as shown in Dia
gram 3, with a grand finale of a dia
gonal strip of fertilizer to cross all
plots.
Cost? Oh, another few small bags
of seed. Benefits? Same as the above
three with additional answers to these
questions (actually, many more than
the ones listed, but maybe that’s be
cause I like to ask lots of questions!):
• Which will come up fastest: birds
foot, ladino, or red clover?
• Will the mixtures be compliment
ary?
• Animal preference?
• Seasonal preference?

I have studied more trial data than
you would care to know. But the re
ality is, I cannot know exactly how tri
al data relates to me and my operation
until I apply it under my own manage
ment. (More than likely, I am going to
do a poorer job than the universities,
so I need better varieties!)

County Sheep Operation
I met Chuck at the Great Lakes
Grazing Conference this year. Chuck
told me he was working on a project to
determine the feasibility of raising
sheep in a part of the world that re
volves around com and soybeans
(northern Illinois).
Taking com ’n bean ground and
putting sheep on it? Sound like some
thing out of a fairy tale!
Anyway, as part of Chuck’s project,
he was going to overseed a 2-year-old
stand of alfalfa with orchardgrass. He

Wedge shaped cutterbar - Less ground resistance, eliminates “bulldozing” in soft ground conditions, and allows
for a lower cutting height when needed.
3 Blades per disc - Vicon’s patented design puts 1/3 less load on each blade and an even load on the drive tram
Top service hubs on cutterbar - Easy Maintenance.
Labyrinth seals - A specially designed labyrinth seal on the hub of each disc prevents dirt, moisture, and all
foreign material from entering.
Full protected cutterbar - Cutterbar is supported completely with an extra shell
and additional wear strips. A reinforcement rod stiffens the cutterbar to prevent
flexing.
Segmented intermeshing fully adjustable conditioning rolls.
Adjustable formed swath doors for fluffy, easy to pick-up windrows

• Full swivel hitch - PTO stays in alignment when cutting square
corners.
• “Free Float” suspension system - With 16” of free stroke in
operating position, the cutterbar follows uneven ground and clears
obstacles The center hinge point also permits the mower unit to
raise or lower at either side without adding excess pressure on the
opposite side. The high-lift design gives swath clearance at
headlands.
