Happy Day, Oh Galileo!
The Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642),
marks his birthday on February 15 It’s the start of a
planetary celebration, with the Moon m its ascending
node on this day and a spectacular conjunction of
Venus and Jupiter beginning on the 22nd. These two
brightest planets will seem to nearly touch, with
Mercury making an appearance below them. Galileo
would be touched if he could train his telescope on the
sight. (He was not this tool’s inventor, but its first user.)
It was Galileo who first observed the four moons of
Jupiter, which, combined with other Copemican theo
ries, landed him under house arrest for
