Hundreds of FFA members, family, and friends witnessed what state FFA chaplain Daniel P. Kreider called a “perfect blend of agriculture and education” Mon day night at the Farm Show. Kreider welcomed 222 Key stone degree recipients, family, and friends to the Farm Show dur ing opening ceremonies of the 70th Annual Pennsylvania FFA Mid winter Convention. At the convention. Dr. Ferman B. Moody, Pennsylvania state director of vocational and techni cal education, spoke about his involvement in NFA and FFA for more than SO years. He addressed the theme of the Mid-Winter Con vention, “On the Edge ... of Achievement,” noting how FFA membership can provide oppor tunity to travel to the “edge of your dreams, to explore the unknown, to make a successful career for your self and your family,” he said. “You are on the edge of the pos sible, of achieving your dreams.” Samuel Hayes Jr., state secret ary of agriculture, reminded FFA members that their involvement in FFA allows them to position for the years ahead. Hayes noted this was the last time this century that FFA’ers would gather for the mid winter convention. The state FFA honored Hayes with the Honorary Service Award, given to an individual who has donated years of outstanding ser vice to the Pennsylvania FFA. FFA members, according to Hayes, are “well-schooled, well trained, and given the tools in hand to achieve success.” U.S. Sen. Rick Santomm (R), on the Senate Committee for Agricul ture, spoke about the wonderfully supportive parents witnessing the convention and friends cheering them on “as dedicated to your suc cess as you are to your success,” he said. The families were gathered at the Large Arena Monday evening “to participate in it” Chapters, students, and Mends were honored at the convention for their support of state FFA. State stars were presented. And winning the state star in horticulture was Tanya Weaver, Grassland FFA. Chad Kramer, Conrad Weiser FFA, won the Agri-Science Award. Chapter safety awards were also presented. Receiving the first place award was Brotbetsvallcy FFA. Second went to West Snyder FFA, and third to Lena pc FFA. Fourth place went to Manor FFA. The state officer team presented special awards for contests for Pennsylvania FFA members. Win ners were Jessica Hyland, Derry FFA and Maria Trego, West Snyd er FFA. Gold award winners for out standing FFA chapters were pre sented. They included a first place to the West Snyder FFA as being a model of innovation chapter at die national level. A second place award went to Twin Valley FFA and third to Lenape AVTS. Other chapters honored with gold included Brothersvalley, Conoco cheague, Cowanesque, Grassland, Manheim, Manor, and Selinsgrove. Chapters receiving silver awards were Cedar Crest, Cloister, Greenwood, Hans Herr, Redbank, and Spud Growers. Bronze award winners included Bellwood-Antis, Central Columbia, Cumberland Valley, Little Lions, Shippens burg, Solanco, and Tyrone Area. The state FFA presented a spe cial award to parents who have already received the Honorary Keystone Degree and who are still devoting their time to help their children earn the Keystone Degree. The award was presented to Michael and Jo Ann Duran, H.G. Parkinson FFA, with child ren, Keith, ’B4; Laurie, ’B4; Greg, ’B7; and Joel, ’99.
