St. Distaff’s Day
On January 7, “neither work nor play,” says the old
proverb, but the women were expected t< > get back to
their spinning on this first day following Epiphany
and the holidays. A distaff is the staff that holds the flax
or wool in spinning It came to sym
bolize the domestic sphere in gen
eral, and "the distaff side” meant
the woman’s side of the family.
Distaff Day was also called

being twisted into yarn. Inter
estingly, Plough Monday, the first Monday after
Epiphany (January 11, this year) was when men were
supposed to resume work, giving them extra days off.
