End to Freedom to Farm? Dairy Compacts'?
Just which direction is farm policy moving in 9 Pennsylvania dairy farmers need to know
Is it going to continue in the path of Freedom to Farm, with less government
intervention 9 Or, will the major changes made in the last farm bill be overturned as
Congress reconvenes in January 9
It is very possible that Freedom to Farm could be imperiled if we face another year of
lower crop prices That could have dramatic impacts on dairy policy Why should dairy
farmers see their price support program disappear if crop farmers are granted higher
support levels 9
And what about Dairy Compacts 9 Authorization has been extended on the Northeast
Interstate Dairy Compact for another six months There will be a major push early next
year to create a Southern Dairy Compact Pennsylvania dairy farmers may be interested
in joining an expanded Northeast Compact, or joining with an expanded Southern Dairy
Compact Or, they may want to fight Compacts
The Real Problems
The reality is that none of these Washington programs are going to save the day for our
family farmers Why 7 The reason is that the solution to declining farm numbers is more
fundamental that can be carried out with a hew Dairy Compact or new federal legislation
