CATTLE: Compared to last week's clos
ing prices, slaughter steers closed steady to
mostly .SO lower. Demand remains fairly
good and in the last two weeks local steers
have lost only 1.00-I.SO, while the Western
direct markets have dropped 4.00-S.OO live
and 6.00-7.00 dressed. Unbelievably low
hog prices are taking their toll on beef
demand as retailers are featuring pork spe
cials in their mealcases. Local Holstein
steers and slaughter heifers ended the week
mostly 1.00 lower. Slaughter cow prices
closed 1.00-1.50 higher as availability is
certain to be low over the next two weeks in
many areas. Slaughter bulls finished firm to
1.00 higher. Supply was made up of around
39 percent slaughter steers, 8 percent
slaughter heifers, 39 percent slaughter
cows, S percent bulls, with the balance
feeders.
