She is a member of River View FFA Chapter, where her advisers are Robert and James Rich. Buxton’s diverse SAE includes sheep, beef cattle, and soybeans. She attends The Ohio State University, where she is a sopho more majoring in agricultural engineering. Santiago is the son of Ana Gonzalez. He is a member of the Piedra Gorda FFA Chapter where his adviser is Luis Cardona. Santiago’s SAE con sists of diversified livestock pro duction, agricultural communi cations experience, and fruit and vegetable production. He is a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he is majoring in agricultural educa tion. Garner’s parents are John and Janet Garner. He is a mem ber of the Hanford FFA Chapter where his advisers are Leonard Deßuiter, Susan Moran, Jim Lunstad, Mike Higham, Dennis Mann, Richard King, and Pam Brem. Agricultural work experi ence placement and a market sheep operation make up Garner’s SAE. He attends California Polytechnic State University where he is a fresh man majoring in agricultural education. During their year of service, the national officers each will travel more than 100,000 miles making hundreds of appear ances on behalf of the FFA. The national officers represent mem bers to official in government, business, education, and agri culture. As they travel during the year, the meet with mem bers on the local, state, and national levels. Organization’s Top Awards Go To lowa, Wisconsin The National FFA Organization announced the winners of its two most presti gious awards, the American Star Farmer and the American Star in Agribusiness, during the 71st National FFA Convention. The 1998 American Star Farmer is Charles Pearce, 21, from Walworth, Wis., and the 1998 American Star in Agribusiness is Andrew Tygrett, 21, from Atahssa, lowa. These awards recognize stu dents who have established prof itable agricultural enterprises or agribusiness programs, demonstrated outstanding man agement skills, earned the American FFA Degree—the organization’s highest level of accomplishment—and met other agricultural education and lead ership requirements. Each winner will receive $l,OOO from the National FFA Foundation Executive Sponsor Program, in addition to the $l,OOO they received as a final ist. Each of the eight star final ists will also take an agricultur al tour of Costa Rica in the sum mer of 1999. Distinguished Service Citations The Distinguished Service Citation was presented at the 71st National FFA Convention to eight companies and organi zations that provide outstanding service and opportunities to the National FFA Organization.
