When selecting sires to use in the herd, the goal is to upgiadc the herd's genetics and to impiovc specific
traits of cows at least cost and with minimum risk
AI studs offer a vanety of genetic choices from healthy bulls of known transmitting ability They also
some of the best genetics and at some of the lowest prices Many studs have young sire sampling
programs that provide producers an opportunity to tap into the best genetics of tomorrow, today - and at
induced cost Some of the incentives they oftcr to entice producers to sample these young sues can covet
a lot of the cost of DHIA testing
Select a gioup of sues that arc plus in milk and plus in protein Then, from that gioup select sires foi
improving specific traits, such as feet and legs, stature, udders, calving ease, etc
If using a herd bull use a virgin bull and ask your veterinarian about the need to vaccinate foi vibriosis
and other diseases of concern
Do not use bulls on cows with breeding problems that arc infection-related, they can spiead that
infection to othci cows m the herd
Remember, with a bull, you are working with only one set of genetics and you can’t tailor the
bleeding piogiam to cows’ individual genetic needs You aie also woikmg with more unknowns
You won’t know for months if the bull effectively settles cows, and it is ycais until you discovci his
transmitting ability If he was a genetic dud, you have lost a lot of valuable lime while youi
competitors have made a lot of genetic gam
Remember, bulls arc a safety hazard and not to be trusted
