Poultry Ambassador Tours Hatchery, Mill
often teaches others about the
importance of including poultry
and eggs in their diets. But, some
times, Sarah is the one who is
taught
Recently, Sarah toured
Longcnecker’s Hatchery. John
Martin, president of the hatchery,
explained the history of the
hatchery.
Before she entered the hatchery,
Sarah pulled on protective boots
and a lab coat to prevent the spread
of disease. She saw white plastic
bins where the chicks ate held until,
they arc ready for delivery. Sarah
watched a machine separate the
shell from the chicks. Later she
saw the area where the chicks arc
debeaked and vaccinated. The
eggs are kept in rooms filled with
incubators that turn every few
hours to keep the yolks from stick
ing to the shell. She also saw how
the eggs arc kept in bins until they
are ready to hatch. In all these
units, temperature and humidity
are carefully monitored in order to
prevent disease and other prob
lems.
After the tour, Sarah watched a

video about a layer house where
the eggs are laid.
Later, Sarah touted Wenger’s
Feed Mill. She watched the trucks
that carry com and other raw
materials for feed-making and how
each ingredients is measured and
carefully tested.
In the mill, Sarah saw the area

Wayne County Fairgrounds in
the large arena.
Judge was Glenn R. Tripp of
Little Genesee, N.Y. There were

tored. She watched as a machine
turned loose feed into pellets.
By taking tours such as these,
Sarah is better able to answer ques
tions that people might ask.
