A22-L«nc«ster Farming, Saturday, November 21, 1998 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The newly formed organization for farmers markets, the Farmers’ Market Federation of New York, is holding a series of four region al meetings this December. The meetings, entitled “Learning From Each Other,” are meant for anyone interested in the Farmers’ Market Federation or farmers’ markets. These meetings will have a twofold purpose. First, the Farmers’ Market Federation will be introduced to the audience. The background of its development will be shared with the par ticipants to give a bet ter understanding of the need for such an organization. This presentation will be given by Bob Lewis, chief marke J ing repre sentatives from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, and by Monika Roth, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tomkins County. Lewis and Roth were instrumental in obtaining grant money to develop the organi zation, as well as being a vital part of the steering commit tee guiding the organi zation through its infancy Next, Diane Eggert, the federation project coordinator, will detail the pro grams and services the organization will have to offer its mem bers. To date, these services will include such things as insur ance, educational pro gramming, promo tions, and a quarterly newsletter. Finally, the meeting partici pants will be given the chance to voice their needs and concerns for the federation. Secondly, the mar keters in attendance will have an opportu nity to hear from other markets At each of the regional meetings, three farmers’ market managers have been selected to give a pro file of their market. They will discuss how their market operates, some of their success es and some of their failures. Following this the audience will break up into round table discussions on attracting new farm ers to your market, promotions, and rules/management. Everyone is encour aged to participate in these open discussions and take the opportu nity to ask questions of others, offer opin ions, and advise and take home new ideas gleaned from each other.
