Maryland’s Shorthorn, Hereford
Associations To Sell Calves
WALKERSVILLE, Md. Two of Maryland’s beef breed registry
organizations have announced plans for a 7 pjn., Oct. 31, club calf sale to
be held at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick.
The Maryland Hereford Association and the Maryland Shorthorn
Association have announced their partnership in presenting the 1998
Dynamic Duo Spotlight Calf Sale, at which 40 hand-selected Shorthorn
and Hereford steer calf project animals arc to be sold.
There are to be two incentive drawings, each worth $lOO toward the
purchase of any steer calf in the sale, held at the start of the calf sale.
All junior exhibitors who purchased a steer in last year's sale, and 41
additional juniors who have registered for a buyer’s number at this year’s
sale are to eligible for the drawing.
As part of the sale requirements, each steer to be sold has been halter
broken, dehorned, wormed, and vaccinated for blackleg, BVD, IBR, PI3,
and BRSV, and meets aU state health requirements.
Also, all steer calves purchased at the sale are eligible to be entered in
their respective breed organization’s steer incentive or futurity program.

In the Hereford
breed, the calves are to
be eligible for a contest
offered through the
Maryland Hereford
Association. The asso
ciation offers a futurity
program that allows
exhibitors of champion
and reserve champion
Hereford steers at Mary
land fairs to have their
names placed in a lot
tery drawing for two
cash awards.
In addition to the pro
ject calf sale, this year’s
sale is to feature a
Dynamic Duo Heifer
Showcase area.
The Heifer Showcase
area is to serve as a place
where Hereford and
Shorthorn breeders may
display some of their top
young heifers, to be
available for private tre
aty purchases.
All of the showcase
heifers are to have been
bom after September
1997 and qualify for the
1999 showing season.
These heifers will not be
sold through the auction
ring.
Showcase offerings
are not limited to purch
ase by 4-H members, as
are those calves sold at
auction.
However, any mem
ber of the Maryland
Junior Shorthorn Asso
ciation who is interested
in a Showcase heifer is
to receive an automatic
$5O discount on the
price, on sale night only.
