September Milk
Production Up
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Milk
production in Pennsylvania during
September 1998 totaled 876 million
pounds, 1.5 percent above last year’s pro
duction, according to the Pennsylvania
Agricultural Statistics Service (PASS).
The number of milk cows in the state
during the month averaged 635,000 head,
down 4,000 from September 1997 and
unchanged from August 1998.
Production per cow averaged 1,380
pounds in September, 50 pounds less than
August but up 30 pounds from September
1997.
Milk production in the 20 states sur
veyed during September 1998 totaled 10.7
billion pounds, up .4 percent when com
pared to production in these same states
during September 1997.
August revised production, at 11.2 bil
lion pounds was down .5 percent from
August 1397. The number of milk cows
averaged 7.76 million head, up 5,000 head
from a year earlier, while production per
cow averaged 1,381 pounds, 4 pounds
above September of last year.
During the July-September period, the
20 major states produced 85.8 percent of
the nation’s production.
If producers in the remaining 30 states
not surveyed monthly followed the trend
shown by the 20 reporting states, U.S.
milk production for September would be
12.5 billion pounds, unchanged from
September of last year.
