Challenge Of The Breeds
“Country Cadilac,” an Arabian owned by Shirley
Craig, Nottingham, was named the Keystone Sovereign
Champion in the 1998 “Challenge of the Breeds" held at
KILE.
The Sovereign Champion receives #l,OOO. “Country
Cadilac” is an g-ycar-old Arabian stallion, who was re
cently named East Coast Champion Trail Horse, and was
reserve Champion Western Pleasure Amateur Owner to
Ride, earning enough points to receive the Relsa Ttoxall
award as High Point Amateur Lady Rider.
This is the fourth time Craig has won the Challenge,
with three different Arabians. She enjoys participating
because, “It is a challenge - it is a good name for the con
test It requires versatility." She said experience helps a
lot, but the primary ingredient for success is training,
which, she said, takes “time and patience.”
An enthusiast for the breed, Craig says she likes them
for their disposition. “They are pleasant and sweet, and
they arc really a nice family horse. They are easy to
keep.” She got her first pony when she was eight, and her
first horse when she was 16. She participated in Lancaster
County 4-H.
In a very close contest, selected by the score of the
sixth class, reserve champion was “Meadow Creek Jake,”
a Percheron owned and ridden by Carolyn Loucks,
Reedsvillc. Placing sixth in last year’s Challenge, “Jake”
has been in the contest for the last three years. He won the
first ever Western and English Draft horse under saddle
