mentally friendly in that growing for
ages can reduce soil erosion and pesti
cide use. Also forages can increase soil
structure and soil organic matter. And
in times of high grain production levels
and low commodity prices, forages can
enhance agricultural profitability.
That’s why forages are important to all
Pennsylvanians.
The Pennsylvania Forage and
Grasslands Council (PFGC) is an or
ganization that is dedusted to the pro
duction and utilizatioriwibJhges. It is
our goal to improve atynphases of for
age and grassland production to bene
fit forage producers and utilizers
and thereby increase profits of Penn
sylvania fanners.
How do we do this? PFGC works
with producers, industry, and educa
tors to collect, evaluate, and share use
ful information to the cutting-edge for
age producers. This is accomplished
through the use of a state newsletter,
Foraging Around, the national maga
zine from the American Forage and
Grasslands Council. Forage work
shops. field days, and assisting with
events such as the state Grazing Con
ference.
Furthermore, PFGC sponsors a Hay
Show at Ag Progress Days to stimulate
high-quality hay production and to re
cognize those top producers. This
year’s show had a large increase in the
number of hay samples and the overall
quality of entries was exceptional. This
is very closely related to die excellent
lhay making weather that was experi
enced in Pennsylvania this year.
PFGC also supports the future of
agriculture by awarding scholarships
to students at Penn State University
and Delaware Valley College who
study forages and grassland manage
ment. PFGC also provides statewide
recognition to individuals and or-
