FREDERICK, Md. An aged
cow was selected as the grand
champion of the open class Hol
stein show here at the Frederick
County Fair. C Melrosa Insp De
lite, a 9-year-old cow exhibited by
Hard-Rock Holsteins, Middle
town, was the senior and grand
champion of the show, held in the
dairy showring at the Frederick
fairgrounds in conjunction with
the 136th annual Great Frederick
Fair.
Judge for the event was Jason
Myers of Windsor-Manor Farm,
New Windsor. Judge Myers said
that the cow's overall scale, her
capacity, and the fact that her ud
der was still well above the hock
and attached well at 9 years of age
put her at the top of the Holstein
show. “I really admire her dairy
ness and her balance. Her udder is
outstanding. She’s very correct in
her feet and her legs; just a real
well put-together individual,” ex
plained Mr. Myers.
Fresh in the middle of August,
Delite had 138 pounds of milk per
day on her last test, said Richard
Kepler, one of her owners. The
Hard-Rock prefix belongs to the
trio of Kepler, Dave Lenhart, and
Tom Mercuro. Mr. Kepler said
Delite, housed in Hagerstown, in
Washington County, was All-
Maryland for 2 years and reserve
All-Maryland last year.
The junior champion of the
Holstein show was the top placed
junior yearling Knob-View En
core Sue, exhibited by Heather
Molesworth of Middletown. The
Sue heifer is a Marcrest Encore
daughter. Heather, the daughter of
Marcia Kepler Molesworth, has
been exhibiting dairy animals for
three years. She has shown at the
county and the state levels.
As in past years the Holstein
show and the Guernsey show were
held together in the showring.
Classes in the two breeds alternat
ed, culminating in the selection of
grand champions of each breed.
The grand champion Guernsey
was a Walnut Ridge Farm entry,
Catoctin Perfect Buttercup. Five
year-old Buttercup, fresh in June,

is milking a little over 75 pounds a
day, according to Pam Hawker
Moser, who led the big Guernsey
around the showring. This was the
first time the Hawker family of
Middletown had shown this parti
cular cow. They have been show
ing Guernseys since the 19505,
and are always a strong presence
at Guernsey shows. This year the
eight family members showed
Guernseys, according to Mrs. Hel
eif Hawker.
The junior champion of the
Guernsey show was the first place
