San Francisco Earthquake
October 17, 1989, is remembered by many around
Loma Prieta, California, for the strongest earthquake
to hit the state since 1906. With a magnitude of 7.1
and an intensity of 9, it killed over 60 people and
brought estimated damages to $6 billion. Despite the
fact that the earthquake was centered in the Santa Cruz
Mountains 60 miles south of San Francisco, San
Francisco and Oakland bore the brunt of its destruction.
With the intensity level of 9, on a scale of 1 to 12,
buildings were shifted off
their foundations and
great damage was done to
substantial buildings,
including partial collapse
Fear is the father of
courage and the
mother of safety.
ns- “Duck, cover, and hold," is the drill for earthquakes. Get
under a strong desk, cover your head, and hold on!
