Should You Use Bt Corn?
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.)-Does it pay to spend the
extra money for Bt hybrids?
Unfortunately, the most com
mon answer is usually "it
depends".
Listed below is a list of crite
ria developed by Dr. Dennis
Calving, Penn State, to help
determine if Bt com would pro
vide an economic advantage to
your operation.
1. History of European com
borer damage in field, and plan
ning on com in the same field
next year.
2. Earliest planted fields,
either long or short season com.
3. Fields that are low lying,
next to streams, or waterways.
4. Fields that are surrounded
by dense grassy vegetation.
5. Fields planted at popula
tions of more than 26,000.
6. Fields grown for grain
and/or harvested late in the sea
son.

year's seed com needs, if you
have fields that match most of

these criteria, they would be
fields that could receive the
biggest economic benefit from
using Bt seed.
Since not all Bt hybrids are
created equal, there are several
factors you should keep in mind
when deciding on which Bt
hybrids to purchase.
1. Check yield data on any Bt
com you may have planted this
year. Compare this data to our
non-Bt varieties.
2. Remember some Bt com
varieties only provide protection
of first generation infestation.
Second generation infestations
usually cause the most economic
damage. Check to see if the vari
ety has protection against sec
ond generation borer pressure.
3. A Bt com variety should
meet all your other require
ments, besides having the Bt
gene.
4. Yield checks are the only
sure way to determine the value
of a Bt hybrid. Some Bt com will
look better than some of the non-
Bt numbers.
