A3B-Lancasttr Farming, Saturday, Octobar 10,1998 Some Win, Some Win Again At KILE Hereford Point Show ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) —A spring yearling heifer born in March 1997 caught the judge’s eye last week. The heifer that “always looks good, always on the move, is really fresh and really angular up front,” according to judge Bobby Singleton, Murfreesboro, Tenn., won intermediate champion and eventually grand champion heifer of the Polled Hereford Show at the 42nd annual Keystone Livestock International Exposition (KILE). The heifer, NS Sara Optima X 2948388 (S: SBR Prime Exp 43A, D: WNM Optima 9312) was exhibited by NS Polled Herefords of Mason, Ohio, late last week dur ing KILE open show competition at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Although the exhibitor. Gene Steiner, farm manager for NS Polled Herefords owned by Dr. Norman Starr, won grand champ ion in 1994, this was the farm’s first grand champion heifer ever at KILE. Steiner, who helped NS Polled Herefords become premier breeder and exhibitor of the show, said this was the first champion ship for the heifer. Steiner said that he also goes to several other point shows, includ ing the one at KILE. The KILE show represents the northeast reg ion. though NS Polled Herefords also attends the Denver and Louis ville shows in addition to Ohio State. NS Polled Herefords maintains about 120 cows on the farm’s cow/ calf operation in Mason, Ohio. They are primarily a seeds lock producer for Herefords. Singleton, manager of Four L Hereford Farm in Murfreesboro, Tenn., chose the junior champion heifer for reserve overall. The junior calf was “really long, really Reserve champion Hereford bull at KILE went to Iron Forge Farm, Lebanon. Grand champion Hereford female at KILE went to . Herefords, Mason, Ohio. The overall, the junior champion of the show, was MS Honoria H 8 Pend ing (S: Star Magic Pace 33SE, D: Jr KSB Brandi D7l). Singleton made the point that different judges will pick different champions, based upon what works on a certain farm. “That’s what makes the cattle business fun,” he said. Grand champion bull went to the entry exhibited by CJ. Fur long, farm-manager for Salunga Acres, Mount Joy, Salunga Form 19F X 23909322 (S: Bar B 15S Yankee. D: CSSBBN BSHNG DL 306 R), a 2-year-old bull that won champion senior bull. Singleton noted the bull "is a super correct bull, with a good rear quarter and rump,” he said. “The bull gets along well for being a big ole 2-year-old.” For Dorothy Metzler at Salunga Acres, the show was dedicated to her husband George, who passed away some time ago. For the bull, it was a return to the championship limelight it enjoyed when it won supreme champion bull at the Hereford show last year at KILE and supreme champion bull over all at this year’s state Farm Show. Singleton chose the champion yearling bull exhibited by Iron Forge Farm, Lebanon, Star National LT 23G ET X 24003887 (S: Star SS Banshee 36E, D: MM MS Pacemaker), for reserve over all bull. Singleton noted the “real attractive” calf that was “a long sided kind of bull, very athletic.” There were a total of 36 exhibi tors and 72 animals at the point show. Got an extra horse around the stable? State Police might be able to give it a job and a home. State Police Commissioner Paul J. Evanko announced that the department is seeking donated horses to supplement its equestrian program. The department has 25 horses and wants to add at least five, he said. “When the department began in 1905, it had a stable of 230 horses which were crucial to patrol efforts,” Evanko said. “Now the horses are used chiefly for searches, crowd control, security and patrol of remote RESERVE bon Fog* Farm Gat of Sba: 1. Donated horses must be geld ings, 5-15 years old, stand at least 16 hands (64 inches at the shoulder), and be quiet and sound. Horses that are brown or chestnut in color are preferred. A veterinary examination will be performed, and horses will be accepted on a 90-day trial basis to determine suitability, Evanko said. Persons interested in donat ing a horse should contact Cpl- Wade Crimbring, supervisor of the State Police Mounted Unit, at (717) 533-9111, ext. 352.
