A3O-Lancnt*r Farming, Saturday, October 10, 1998 ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) Simply put, Travis Donough was getting tired of trying. After four reserve market lamb championships at the Manheim Farm Show, he thought he used up all his chances of ever getting the coveted grand champion trophy. But the fifth attempt on Thurs day night proved key. Parading “Renegade.” a purebred homebred Suffolk wether in front of judge John Con away, Suffolk breeder from New ville, helped Travis clinch the overall champion, using the sale lamb, in competition against the nonsale lamb and bred-and-owned lamb. Conaway liked the wether’s tremendous muscling and how it was “extended in frame,” he noted. Finally, Travis, 18, son of Ed and Larue Donough. Manheim, could hold the grand champion tro phy. Travis, a 1998 graduate of Manheim Central High School, serves as the state FFA sentinel. Travis said he named the champion “Renegade” in honor of one of his favorite songs by Tim McGraw. The 129-pound purebred Suffolk was homebred from the family’s ewe. Travis said he has one more year to show in 4-H and another two to three years in FFA, Reserve went to the 97-pound nonsale champion exhibited by John Tracy, 13, son of Gerry and Ellen Tracy, Elizabethtown. John, in the eight grade at Elizabethtown Middle School, exhibited a Suf folk crossbred wether named “Blizzard.” John’s first Manheim champion was purchased from the Svonavec Family in Somerset at a club lamb sale in April. Both John and his dad decided on the lamb when it was about 40 pounds at the sale. Donough’s Fifth Attempt At Manheim Market Grand Lamb Proves Sweetest be going to the Farm Show this year, according to Gerry Tracy. In the breed competition. Jessi ca Stoltzfus won overall champion with a Dorset ewe lamb. Conaway said the lamb exhi bited a “tremendous amount of muscle.” Jessica, 18, is the daught er of Frank and Irene Stoltzfus, Elizabethtown. Jessica, who was reserve champion market lamb last year at the farm show, is a senior at Eli zabethtown High School. She said this was the last year she would show at Manheim. She said she would keep the purebred Dorset in her flock to breed. The Dorset won supreme at the county roundup and at the Eli zabethtown Fair. Her dad, Frank, attributed the bred-and-owned champion to con sistency and good genetics. There were a total of 137 head of sheep and 44 exhibitors. Follow ing is a list of show placings. Researchers in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences have received more than $630,000 for the second phase of a unique program that trains students to take an inter disciplinary approach to study ing plant root growth. “This program provides a wide umbrella for students to do research, with thousands of things that they can do relating to root biology,” said Hector Flores, professor of plant pathol ogy and biotechnology, and pro ject director of “Radical Biology II: Collaborative Research Training in Advanced Root Biology.” “For instance, if someone wants to study how roots modify their structure to cope with water deficiencies, they may need to collaborate with a biolo gist, an engineer or a mathe- Hsavywaight Champion: Ryan Donough. Our program allows them to incorporate these differ ent people and disciplines.” Although plant roots are responsible for a wide array of natural products, they are just beginning to be studied as dis crete biological systems, accord ing to Flores. And, he explains, the interdisciplinary nature of this program allows researchers to take a non-traditional approach, bringing together experts in plant biology, genet ics, biochemistry, toxicology, and many other areas. Starting in fall 1998, the pro gram will fund two- to four-year training programs for graduate students, who will work with faculty teams in overlapping areas that range from ecology to molecular biology. They will par ticipate in special courses, work shops, annual retreats and sem- (Turn to Pag* A 42)
