820-Lancaater Fanning, Saturday, October 3, 1998 Lampeter Sheep Show LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff LAMPETER (Lancaster Co.) When April Leaman clutched trophies for showmanship and the grand champion 4-H market lamb at the Lampeter Fair, her competi tors knew she had earned the awards in an unusual and challeng ing show. Poised and articulate. April explained the difference between this show and other county shows. She said, “The difference was in application. Today the judge was testing for knowledge not only manual application. Lamb exhibitors at the Lampe ter Fair Sheep Show were intrigued by the different style of judging done by Barbara Herr Bambury, who owns B&B Sheep with 2,000 commercial ewes in Ohio. Bambury individually ques tioned each exhibitor about mat ters pertaining to sheep care. From their answers during the showman Kevin Boyer shows the FF A champion market lamb at the Lampeter Fair. ‘Zimmermans’ Dominate (Continued from Page B 19) PAIR OF BREEDING 1 Alexandra Lauffer 2 Jonn-Mane Lauffer, 3 Alexandra Lauffer FLOCK f Alexandra Lauffer SOUTHDOWN YEARLING RAMS CHAMPION Jennifer Calhoun EWE LAMBS CHAMPION 1 Jen Zimmerman EWE LAMBS 2 Jay Zimmerman 3 Samantha Dissmger YEARLING EWES RESERVE CHAMPION Jan Zimmerman YEARLING EWES 2 Jay Zimmerman, 3 Jay Zimmerman AGED EWES I Jen Zimmerman 2 Jay Zimmerman PAIR OF BREEDING 1 Jen Zimmerman, 2 Jay Zimmerman, 3 Jay Zimmerman SUFFOLK RAM LAMBS CHAMPION Andrew Gerhart RAM LAMBS 2 Andrew Gerhart EWE LAMBS 1 Andrew Gerhart 2 Andrew Gerhart YEARLING EWES CHAMPION Andrew Gerhart AGED EWES RESERVE CHAMPION Andrew Gerhart PAIR OF BREEDING 1 Andrew Gerhart, 2 Andrew Gerhart FLOCK 1 Andrew Gerhart BREEDERS YOUNG 1 Andrew Gerhart OTHER HORNED RAM LAMBS CHAMPION Jen Zimmerman YEARLING EWES CHAMPION Jen Zimerman YEARLING EWES RESERVE CHAMPION Jen Zimmerman AGED EWES 1 Jen Zimmerman PAIR OF BREEDING 1 Jen Zimmerman ship competition, Hamburg selected April, who is IS years old, and Tiffany Dean, 11, and asked impromptu questions, which they needed to answer in the micro phone for the audience to hear. Both girls answered clearly and calmly. April was selected as the champion in showmanship and Tiffany as the reserve showman ship and the champion in fitting. Bambury said, “One of the aspects of showmanship is public speaking. I think kids should be able to answer questions off the top of their heads. They should know what they are feeding their sheep. They should know how to set up a lamb to show off its best angle.” When the judge asked April to set up her lamb to show off its best angle, she immediately said the lamb’s big, heavy, muscular leg was its most outstanding feature and set it up accordingly. From 22 4-H entries, April’s homebred lamb, named “Piggy." captured the judge’s eye. “It has thickness throughout, is firm with a square dock and is heavily muscle! When you get your hands on it, you appreciate how it handles,” Bambury said. April and her brother Brad Lea man have been showing in 4-H since they were eight-years-old. Their parents, David and Jackie Leaman, had purchased a few sheep years ago for something pretty to look at and mow the grass on their Willow Street property. When April entered 4-H, the fami ly selected Suffolks, and have con tinued to upgrade the flock through breeding. The Leamans are pleased to report that they have never bought a market lamb but always bred their own to show. They also showed champion pairs this year. April and Brad take turns picking the lambs they want to show and split the winnings, except for showmanship, between them. The championship was a toss-up between April’s and Tiffany’s market lamb. Tiffany’s “stylish” iamb was conditioned just right and handled tremendously, according to Bambury, who expressed disappointment that she could not select two champions. In FFA competition, Kevin Boyer, 19, showed the champion market lamb, which was the mid dleweight champion. “It’s ideally conditioned, and puts together the prettiest pack age.” Bambury said of the 20 FFA entries. The purebred Hampshire was a Dinsmore lamb. Boyer was 16 years old before he started showing sheep. His sheep raising has influenced him to become a farmer. Since he was graduated from Penn Manor High School, Boyer works full time on a farm and hopes to own his own farm someday. Bambury has beginning roots in Narvon, Lancaster County. Her parents. Dr. and Mrs. Robert Herr, introduced her and her siblings to sheep showing at a young age. They went on to cam many state championships and several siblings continue to show sheep. Since 1993, B&B has shown the champion market lamb at the Ohio State Fair in addition to hundreds of the lambs they sell throughout the states.
