Honey bees and plants bene fit each other in a special way. Many flowering plants provide nectar and pollen for honey bees. In turn, bees pollinate our commercial fruits, vegetables, and garden plants enabling them to produce fruit like apples, cantaloupe, watermelon and others. Poor pollination causes poor yields and mis shapen fruit. As the Fall temperatures drop below 60° during the day, bees become inactive. A single hone bee makes 12 to 15 visits per day to flowers. Bees collect pollen and or nectar from a wide variety of plants included honey suckle, clover, and buckwheats. Pollen and water are essen tial to bees. Pollen is their only natural source of protein. Without it, colonies could not produce new bees. The hive would eventually die. A beginning beekeeper might ask, what crops or plants specif ically attract honey bees? In Pennsylvania beekeepers are largely dependent on cultivated crops grown for other purposes or on wild plants. For example, a vegetable grower gains 25-50% higher yields with bee colonies brought to fields of squash, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins or gourds. Under certain conditions, gardeners plants good honey plants in their home landscapes to maximize a bees activities. A nectar plant should be no more than 200 to 300 yards from the colony. Some nectar and pollen pro ducing plants bloom well into the fall. Honey color and flavor are determined by the plant or plants from which the bees col lect nectar. To produce honey for your table or the retail market, bees must have access to an abundance of plants. Plants yielding large amounts of nectar are preferred. Major nectar sources include clover, sweet clover, willow, raspberry, maple, golden rod, dandelion and alsikas clover. These sources make a high quality, table grade honey. Many factors affect a plant's nectar production including fer tility, soil moisture, and acidity, altitude, latitude, length of day, the number of hours of sunlight per day, and weather. Bees gath ering nectar from several sources, including a variety of wildflowers, produce honey that is usually dark and strong fla vored honey. This is generally the case with the fall nectar flow, which usually yields a dark, strong flavored honey. However, this honey is usually suitable for over-wintering bees. Golden rod and asters are two fall-blooming plants that may yield such honey. Observes bees closely to learn what plants they prefer for col lecting nectar and pollen. Keep records of dates when these plants bloom. Late season bloomers in the garden or in the wild that pro vide nectar and/or pollen for bees include: alyssum, anise hyssop, aster, sedum 'autumn joy', Joe-pye weed, borage, cat mint, chives, garlic chives, gold- FREE $lO phone card.
