Also on Saturday the Central
Maryland Antique Tractor Club
will hold an antique tractor pull at
10 a.m. Sunday starts with a pedal
tractor pull for the kids at 12:30
p.m. For those who pride them
selves on their baking ability the
21st annual Francis Crum Memor
ial Cake contest will take place on
Sunday, with judging at 12:30
p.m. and the auction at 2 p.m. The
auction is another fund-raiser for

Throughout the weekend a saw
mill will be in operation, powered
by a steam engine. Wheat thresh
ing will also take place both days.
Additional weekend activities in
clude hay rides, craft demonstra
tions, sales, farm life displays,
farm animals, and antique farm
equipment
For the children there will be
games and activities. The Chil
dren’s Museum at Rose Hill Man
or Park will present “Craft Ways.”
Children will have hands-on op
portunities to dip candles, make
soap, and experience cooking on
the open hearth. Visitors can tour
the historic mansion that served as
the home of Maryland’s first
Governor, Thomas Johnson.
Entertainment includes the Har
mony Coronet Band on Saturday,
and the Gospel Travelers on Sun
day. As always visitors will be
treated to the homestyle foods and
fresh baked pies at the Farm Mu
suem food stands.
The festival is held at Rose Hill
Manor Park, 1611 North Market

We recently entertained three of
our grandchildren. They were here
all day and we did many things to
gether. Let me tell you some of the
jobs that we accomplished.
They are three, four, and seven
years old. In the garden we picked
green beans for dinner and a big
bucket of tomatoes. Then they saw
the cherry tomatoes and began to
fill a small bucket with them. The
oldest boy thought I should sell
them, but I told him we will give
them away.
The youngest girl and I baked a
big chocolate cake and we peeled
potatoes for French fries for din
ner. They asked me how I make
tea and so we went outside and ga
thered tender stems from two
kinds of mint tea beside the gar
age, and I steeped it
Earlier I had gathered some
large chestnuts. So. I cooked a few

but after I peeled them, they de
cided they did not like the nuts,
and so I ate them. We took a walk
to pick goldenrod and I saw poke
weed berries were ripe. When I
mashed them, they had a beautiful
pink-lavendar juice to use for
painting. The youngest make
pages and pages of pretty scrawls
and the others printed letters for
the refrigerator door.
Besides these things, we sat on
the back porch glider and I told
them stories about the animals of
their choice. Next we played
“Hide and Seek,” “Who has the
Button,” and “Hide the Thimble.”
The boys played soccer with
their own equipment in our front
yard. And, scattered among all of
this activity they also watched
some children’s programs on tele-
vision and then “rested” for an
hour in the basement playroom.
