33 Teams Compete In 30th Invitational Youth Dairy Judging Contest
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) - The Ohio State
University's collegiate judging
team won first place in the 30th
annual Invitational Youth Dairy
Judging Contest held as part of
the 35th annual Pennsylvania
All-American Daily Show at the
farm Show Complex in
Harrisburg. Thirteen collegiate
teams participated.
Maryland 4-H was the top
winner in the 4-H division,
which had 14 teams entered,
and students at Solanco FFA in
Lancaster County, took top hon
ors in the FFA division, with six
teams competing.
Ohio State's collegiate team
placed first in the Brown Swiss,
Guernsey and Holstein competi
tions; second in Jerseys; and
fifth in Ayrshires.
They were second overall in
reasons, and had three of the top
10 individuals overall, and two
of the top 10 individuals in rea
sons.
The Ohio State team received
the Cuthbert Nairn Rotating
Trophy, named in memory of
Cuthbert Naim who was instru
mental in founding the
Pennsylvania All-American
Dairy Show.
Ohio State's Christopher
Lahmers was second overall in
individual competition and sec
ond overall in reasons. He was
first in Brown Swiss, Holsteins
and Jerseys.
Team member Aaron Wise
was fifth overall, and fourth in
Guernseys. Kim Tessanne was
seventh overall and eighth in
total reasons, and second in
Brown Swiss and Holsteins.

the fourth member of the team.

Second place team, the
University of Maryland, was
third overall in reasons, first in
Ayrshires, second in Holsteins,
and third in Guernseys and
Jerseys.
Maryland's mark Schnebly
was high individual overall and
was third in reasons. The coach
was Dr. Lee Majeskie.
Other top team finishers in
the collegiate division were
Cornell University, Virginia
Tech, University of Illinois (fist
in Jerseys), University of
Florida, Purdue University,
University of Minnesota, The
Pennsylvania State University,
and University of Wisconsin-
Madison.
In collegiate reasons, Cornell
University was first, with team
member Matthew Day named
high individual in reason.
Cornell's team, coached by
David Galton, received the
Harry F. Roth Rotating Trophy.
University of Florida was
fourth in reason, and Virginia
Tech was fifth.
Maryland's winning 4-H
judging team placed first in
Ayrshires and Holsteins; second
in Jerseys; and fifth in Brown
Swiss.
The Maryland team was first
overall in reason placings.
Maryland's Mike Creek was
first in overall individual compe
tition, and second overall in rea
sons, and fifth in Holsteins.
Helping the Maryland team
claim victory was Barbara
Schenning, who placed fifth
overall, was fifth in reasons, sec
ond in Holsteins, third in
Jerseys, and fourth in Ayrshires.
Jeena Rinehart of Maryland,
placed ninth overall individually
and was first in total reasons,

second overall and second in
total reason. They were third in
Ayrshires, fourth in Brown

Jerseys. Florida's Brooke
Reinagle was second in total
scores and third in reasons
scores. She was second in
Jerseys.

overall 4-H competition include

The Centre County Grange
Fair open dairy show was held
early this month in Centre Hall.
Steve Shaw of Williamsburg,
sorted through 161 animals of
five breeds to find their respec
tive champions.
The Ayrshire and Brown
Swiss shows were predominate
ly taken home by Charles Liner.
The only honor that he did not
take was Jr. Champion, which
Holly Heinrichs received.
Four Springs Jerseys was
farm pre-fix of three of the four
champion Jerseys. Jennifer
Kellerman owns the jr. champi
on winter calf and her brother
Joshua owns the res. jr. champi
on spring calf. J. Craig & Susan

had the grand champion 4 yr.

the cow classes are in the
evening. Emily Clonmger with
her fall calf had jr champion
and Lori Connelly had res. jr.
champion with her fall yearling.

Brian Mull of Solanco FFA
was fourth in both overall com
petition and in reason; third in
Guernseys, fourth in Brown
Swiss and Fifth in Ayrshires.
Mike Bollinger was tenth over
all and fifth in total reason.
Doug Hoffer rounded out the
team, coached by Arba Henry.
Other FFA teams placing
include Northern Adirondack
(NY) FFA (fifth in reasons;
Caesar Rodney Del. FFA (third
in reasons): Putnam County (ga)
FFA (first in reasons);
Huntingdon
mittee and Centre Co. Holstein
club sponsor a three year old
futurity class. Taking that honor
was Penn Dell Farm with Penn
Dell Slocum Rita. The grand
champion was a 5 yr. old cow
owned by David Kochner and
the res. grand champion honor
went to Troy Hartle with his 4
yr. old. The premier breeder and
premier exhibitor awards went
to Penn Dell Holsteins Jay H.
and Mary F. Houser Family. Jay
and Mary were pleased to take
the honor home, with all of the
family present except for Mary
Ellen’s husband, who was home
on the farm in Wisconsin.
