CYNTHIA L. WARNER
TIMONIUM, MD - The
Brown Swiss breed once again
made a great showing at the
117th Maryland State Fair, in
Timonium, MD. A big highlight
of this 10 day fair is the naming
of the supreme champion at the
conclusion of the dairy show.
This year, the grand champion
Brown Swiss, Shen Val Jades
Cara went on to compete against
the "best of breeds" on Labor
Day, following the tradition
Holstein Show, and was named
the supreme champion dairy
cow of the 1998 Maryland State
Fair. This outstanding aged cow,
sharp and angular displayed a
beautiful udder, and is owned
and exhibited by Ernie and
Elliott Kueffner, Boonsboro, Md.
A total of 85 Brown Swiss
made a strong presentation from
heifer classes, cow classes, and
included an exceptional group of
11 two-years-old competing in
the "Fifth" Mid Atlantic Brown
Swiss Futurity. The quality of
animals ran deep in all classes,
and was really noticeable in the
outstanding Futurity class.
Well-known Holstein breeder
and Judge. James Burdette,
Mercersburg, did the honors of
lining up the classes for the day.
Also, highlighting the Brown
Swiss show was the selection of
the "Best Two-Year-Old for the
day, which is the Mid Atlantic
Brown Swiss Futurity. It came
down to "two terrific gals with
two terrific cows" After Judge
Burdette's remarks, and the
suspense had heightened, he
named Glad Ray PR Frannie the
winner of the 1998 Futurity,
exhibited by Jennifer Keilholtz,
Emmitsburg, MD. The close sec
ond place was Heilmger Jet Meg
Myra, exhibited by Laura
Heilmger, Lebanon. Judge
Burdette commented that the
winner was a beautiful "chiseled
out" dairy cow, and granted the
second place animal on being a
very correct, well-balanced cow
Glad Ray PR Frannie is sired by
Johann Pete Rose, and was also
named the Best Bred & Owned
animal in the Futurity, and
received an authentic Swiss
pocket watch in a silver case
Jennifer also received a $3OO 00
cash award as the winner.
The reserve senior champion
was also exhibited by Jennifer
Keilholtz, the second place aged
cow, Shady Creek Lem Mac
Madora
Receiving the intermediate
champion of the show was also
the Futurity winner, Glad Ray
PR Frannie, shown by Jennifer
Keilholtz, Emmitsburg, MD.
The reserve intermediate cham
pion honors went to Gary Mase,
Lebanon, exhibiting the first
place jr. 3-yr-old, Meadow Hill
Patrick Alama.
Competition in the heifer
classes was strong, and
Burdette named a big, stylish,
fall yearling, GS FU Tippy ET
the junior champion of the show
She was exhibited by Jami
Savage, Knoxville, MD. Tippy is
a real crowd pleaser with her
size and scale, and is a repeat jr
champion winner from the 1997
Maryland State Fair The
reserve jr. Champion female was
a beautiful ribbed, and stylish
summer yearling, Hoodstead
Jetway Nicole, exhibited by
