For the region’s finan cially strapped livestock produc ers, two key measures before Congress would provide a badly needed boost, State President Robert Junk said. The proposals, to require price reporting on all livestock sales and the labeling of import ed meat, will help make the market more fair and competi tive for the nation’s producers. Mandatory price reporting Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 19, 1998-A43 Farmers Union Urges Measures oost Livestock Market will help and end anti-competi tive practices that have kept prices low for producers. Nearly 80 percent of red meat process ing nationwide is controlled by just three multinational firms. And, despite precipitous drops in the prices of live animals, con sumer prices for meat have remained constant. “Mandatory price reporting will help end secret deals in the livestock industry that drive prices down,” said Robert Junk. “Producers, like anyone else sell ing a product, deserve full infor mation in order to make sound, market driven business deci sions. Without price transparen cy, the buyer rides and the seller gets a low price. That is by no means a fair, free or competitive market.” The second measure will require “domestic” or “imported” labels on most beef and lamb Wissert Named To Council ALFRED, N.Y. Joan Wis sert, assistant professor and chair. Agriculture and Horticulture De partment, Alfred State College, was recently named to the Advis ory Council of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) for Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She will serve a three year term. The CALS Advisory Council provides advice and counsel on broad matters of policy and plan ning to the deans and directors of the college. Forty Council mem bers offer input on the college’s programs and on local and state needs. Council members are selected based on their expertise and ex perience and on their capability in representing one ex' more of the six major programs of the college. The six areas include agriculture community, human and rural re sources, environment and natural resources, food and nutrition, in ternational programs, and life sci ences. products. Meat produced in the U.S. meets the most rigorous health standards in the world. Labeling will give consumers, who have invested in our food safety system, the right to choose U.S. produced meat. “U.S. producers provide the safest food supply in the world, and we’re proud of it. Labeling will allow consumers to support that proud tradition,” Robert Junk said. Producers should call their senators and member of Congress and ask them to sup port mandatory price reporting and country-of-origin labeling. They can be contacted through the Capitol operator at 202-224- 2131. For more information, call National Farmers Union at 1- 877-466-2277 also Farmers Union on the Internet: http://www.nfu.org.
