YORK (York Co.) Tanuni
Grubb showed the grand champion
market steer in Junior Beef Com
petition at the York Fair recently.
“It’s a meat wagon," said Cheryl
Fairbaim who judged the 1,270
heavyweight and the 31 entries in
junior competition.
It was Tammi’s first champion
ship in nine years of showing but
the third time she was named grand
champion showman at York Fair.
Tammi’s advice to youth start
ing in showing is “Be patient.
When the time comes (to win), it’s
great!”
Tears will be shed, Tammi said
of the upcoming parting when
Coby will be sold at the livestock
sale. Coby had been purchased
from Paul Miller.
Tammi is the daughter of Carl
and Brenda Grubb who raise
Angus and Hereford breeding
cattle at Sunset Hollow Farm in
Hanover.
The reserve grand champion
steer in the junior show went to
Hope Long, who was also the
reserve showman. Her crossbred
steer Bugsie weighed 1,230
pounds. Bugsie, named because of
his bug-eyed look, was purchased
from Tim Fitzgerald of Va.
Hope, 13, is the daughter of
York Fair Holds Open and Junior Beef Shows
Samuel and Vicki Long who oper
ate Long View Acres of Airville.
Ironically, Bugsie competed in
the open market show against 55
head and was named grand champ
ion over all breeds.
The grand champion Polled
Hereford Kai-T was homebred at
the Mike and Mardene Firestine’s
Map Farm and shown by Margeau
x Firestine, 13. The Firestines have
about 30 Polled Herefords.
Steve Nelson of Forest Hill,
Md., showed the grand champion
Simmental in the open beef show.
The judge selected the Simmen
tal for its feminity.
The supreme champion bull was
from Salunga Acres, which is
owned by Dorothy Metzler. The
two-year-old named Salunga
Yankee was previously named
grand champion at the New York
State Fair, reserve champion at the
Maryland State Fair, and supreme
champion at the Pennsylvania
Farm Show.
Cited for its very correct struc
ture soundness and well balance,
the champion bull is part of the 125
cow-herd at Salunga Acres in Lan
caster County.
According to manager C.J. Fur
long, Salunga Acres will hold its
fourth production sale on Nov. 7.
In open classes, Tammi Grubb
of Sunset Hollow Farm showed the

night at the Denver Fair. Show judge was Larry Arnold.
champion Angus bull, which is
owned in partnership with Turning
Point Angus of Benyville, Va. the
bull was a previous champion at
both the Pennsylvania breeders
show and at the State Farm Show.
In the Open Market Beef Show
judged by Greg Kreuger, he said
that all breed champions had
adequate musceling and structure
soundness. “I basically judge
cattle from behind ” he said in
looking for thickness.
Although Krueger said each
breed adds something to the indus
try, he believes the Angus breed
shows more structual soundness
and more of what the industry
wants.
Hope Long showed Bugsie to
take grand champion honors over
all breeds.
Jay Rishel showed the reserve
champion market steer in the open
market beef show. The heavy
weight steer named Guy was the
champion Angus and reserve
heavyweight.
The 17-year-old has been show
ing for three to four years, but this
was his first major win. That same
day. Jay also showed the champion
Hampshire ewe and lamb in the
youth and open shows. Jay lives

DENVER (Lancaster Co.)
Denver swine show judge Lany
Arnold, Womclsdorf, always
keeps in mind the “image" of what
a great show hog should look like
long-bodied, heavily muscled,
lean and correct
Sarah Boyd’s 270-pound
crossbred gilt met that image Tues
day night at the market swine
championship at the Denver Fair.
“If you wanted to draw an ideal
hog, you’d pretty much get that,”
he noted about Sarah’s supreme
champion.
Sarah, 17, daughter of Deb and
Keny Boyd, Ephrata, is a senior at
Ephrata High School. Sarah
showed a York/Hampshire/
Pietrain crossbred nicknamed
“Patches.”
The gilt has a “spot on her
back,” said Sarah, which helped
her name it. It’s also known as a
Bluebutt hog in the industry.
The gilt was homebred using a
sow that was the “sister to the
champion junior barrow and
reserve overall at KILE last year,”
Hampshires in Seven Valleys.

kind of pig,” said Arnold. He chose
the 265-pound Hampshire
crossbred gilt shown by Kyle
Fleener, 14, son of Tim and Sarah
Flcencr, Robesonia.
Kyle, in the ninth grade at East

said he has won reserve champion
hog the past three years at Denver.

clean,” noted Sarah, Kyle’s
mother.
Kyle will be showing at KILE
and at Farm Show.
