On September 19, 1876, Melville R Bissell received a
patent on a carpet sweeper, a device that revolution
ized housecleaning and nearly (but not quite') put an
end to the rigorous rug beatings of
former days At first, the Bissell
sweepers were used primarily in big
hotels and other sizable institutions.
1901, an English inventor named H
Cecil Booth patented a suction cleanei
(now recognized as the vacuum clean
er), an improvement on the Bissel
carpet sweepers, which required tw
people to'handle them because of
enormous size and weight
