Receives County
Service Award
NEWARK, Del. Alton L.
Rogers of Georgetown, Del., re
ceived the 1998 Sussex County
Outstanding Service to Agricul
ture Award. The presentation was
made Aug. 12 at the Research and
Education Center (REC) in
Georgetown, following a picnic at
the University of Delaware’s
Farm and Home Field.
Rogers’ love of agriculture be
gan long before 1965, the year he
left carpentry to become a full
time grain farmer. Bom and raised
in Georgetown, he attended
Georgetown High School before
joining his father, Norman, in the
family construction business; he
even worked on some of the of
fices and laboratories for the REC,
then known as the Substation.
A World War II veteran, Rogers
served in the Army, stationed at
Okinawa. He is married to the
former Doris Clendaniel.
Rogers has served the agricul
tural community as a stockholder
and past director of the Laurel
Grain Company as well as stock-

Agency. In addition, he has served
as manager of the New Ditch
Company for the Division of Soil
and Water.
A member of Grace United
Methodist Church, Rogers also
belongs to the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, American Legion Post No.
8 and Union Lodge.
Rogers’ service to agriculture
through the University of Dela
ware’s College of Agriculture and
Natural Resources has been ex
emplary. He has supported college
research and cooperative exten
sion efforts by cooperating in field
crop trials, and has served three
terms as president of the Sussex
County Extension Advisory
Board, a volunteer organization
that provides input on the col
lege’s extension efforts.
