WILMINGTON, Del. The
fanners of the next century will
work as much, or more, with their
heads as with their hands, accord
ing to the 1998 class of DuPont
New Century Farmers.
These young fanners believe
the skills that will be critical to
their success are people manage
ment, technology use, marketing,
financial astuteness and business
sense, as well as the ability to be
flexible and adaptable.
“The main thing will be the
ability to adapt,” said Philip Eby.
Philip Eby, 1998 DuPont New Century Farmer, is con
gratulated by James Borel, president, crop protection
products and VP/GM, DuPont.
Century Farmers Will Farm With Their Minds
“The agricultural industry is ever
changing. We will need to change
our ways in order to keep up with
demands.”
The 1998 class is the second
class of DuPont New Century
Fanners, a program initiated in
1996 in cooperation with the Na
tional FFA Organization. The pro
gram is designed to help young
people, who are committed to pur
suing fanning as a career, learn
and grow into successful fanners
in the 21st century.
Philip Eby is one of 38 young
farmers who were selected from a
pool of competitive applications
filled out by young fanners (18-22
years of age) from coast to coast.
The selected applicants partici
pate in an intensive four-day semi
nar to leant from each other and a
host of industry experts during a
series of workshops and sessions
on issues and topics ranging from
the global marketplace to farm
financing to creating a vision to
family businesses. In addition to
classroom learning, students are
exposed to the latest develop
ments in agricultural technology,
field tours, sessions on personal
and professional development,
and team-building and self-esteem
exercises.
