Bennecoff Siblings Sweep Allentown Swine Breed Show
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Fanning Staff
ALLENTOWN (Lehigh Co.) —
Though there were no official
nicknames. Todd Lee and his sis
ter, Justine, should have named
their champion hogs “Durability”
and “Porkshire,” respectively.
After all, Todd Lee Bennecoff
Jr.’s supreme champion gilt at
Allentown, a Duroc, came from a
breed known for its efficient utili
zation of feed and a correct struc
ture that makes her “durable,”
according to the judge.
And Justine Bennecoffs York
shire (what the judge calls the
“Porkshire”) supreme champion
boar shows off Its “balance of all
the merits in modem-day breeding
swine,” said Don Verhoff, a breed
er of Landrace and Duroc swine
out of Ottawa, Ohio.
Verhoff noted that the York
shire included “well-designed,
correct feet and toes, a heavy struc
ture, and a body capacity to match,
yet with leanness.”
Verhoff judged the two-day
swine show, which included 32
exhibitors and 325 hogs (the num
bers are up from last year), Wed
nesday and Thursday this week.
But Verhoff was quick to point
out that both the gilt and boar were
picked as supreme because they
exhibit “the supreme ideals of
breed character and structure.”
Todd Lee, 10, is the son of Todd
and Cheryl Bennecoff, Kutztown.
For Todd, it was the first supreme
champion gilt at the Allentown
Fair.
The gilt, a 4-H project hog, had
an official name: Atlas Power (S:
BSH7 Atlas, D: CLLS Horse Pow
er), a February gilt. This was the
third time the Duroc gilt won
supreme champion, according to
Cheryl Bennecoff. The hog won
supreme at the Pennsylvania Fair
near Philadelphia and the Sussex
County, NJ. Fair recently. The
hog was homebred.
Todd, named overall champion
of the swine competition at the
fair, is in his third year with the
Lehigh County 4-H Swine Club.
He’s in the fifth grade at North
western Middle School.
Justine. 8, is in the third grade at
Weisenburg Elementary. She
showed the supreme champion
boar, a Yorkshire February boar,
with a registration name of Vin
tage (S: SHF7 Vintage, D: CBH7
Tiliie). Justine won champion boar
out of the open class.
There are several more shows
planned for the Bennecoffs,
including the Sullivan County
Fair, Bloomsburg, York, the Key
stone International Livestock
Expo, county roundup, and Farm
Show.

EPHRATA (Lancaster Co.)
At the 20th anniversary of the
founding of Brubaker Agronomics
Consulting Service, 150 fanners
attended a field day to view the
results of crop protection products
in field trials. TTie event held at the
Schantz farm located east of
Ephrata off route 272 was one of
many held this year to host nearly
1,000 farmers at the privately own
ed independent ag research farm.
Owner Mike Brubaker said the
research projects are chosen by
consensus from both farmers and
industry people who see what the
needs are in the fields. Brubaker
Supreme market swine champ
ion went to Elizabeth Wisser, 17,
daughter of Tutty and Larry Wiss
er, New Tripoli. The senior at
Northwestern High School
showed a 270-pound heavyweight
Landrace-Yorkshire gilt pur
chased from a farm in Mertztown.
The seven-year Lehigh County
4-H Swine Club member, also
named reserve overall showman
ship champion, said she selected
the hog, champion of the ag ed
market class, to show for its length
and leanness. She has studied flori
culture at the vo-tech school and
hopes to be a florist someday. She
will be showing at Reading and
Farm Show.
The judge noted the market hog
exhibited lots of “structure and
product in one package.”
Following is a list of show
placings.
