August means different
things to different people. To
some folks it is time to send the
children back to school. There
are always new clothes and
shoes to be purchased and other
clothes to be sorted for size.
When I was a youngster, I
think that we “passed on” a lot
of clothes as there were seven
girls going to school all at the
same time. That meant that a
lot of lunches were packed the
evening before school.
Our calendar for August lists
more birthdays than usual.
There are several grandchil
dren’s birthdays listed and some
anniversaries of other family
members. It does take time
away from canning and freezing
to mail the proper cards. And,
often one feels that a note
should be added which also
takes time. However, it is one

way of keeping in touch with our
far-flung relatives.
Recently we took two of our
young grandchildren to my hus
band’s camper as they were anx
ious to fish in the lake. The older
boy was quite persistent and did
catch a fish, we only had a few
small ones to bring home as my
husband asked me to release a
bigger one as he feared it was
not big enough to keep.
We discovered that the boys
are restless sleepers but some
times we adults are also. My
husband says it is no fun to lay
awake at night and try to fall
asleep. When we were younger,
we were so tired from working
that nothing kept us awake
except our babies. At one time
we did not understand when a
100-year-old aunt said, “I can’t
sleep after 4 o-clock.” Now we
understand.
