No Secrets Divulged By Kutztown Champion

KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) “I
can’t give away my secrets," said
Laura Segan when asked how she
managed to show the champion
market lamb at the Kutztown Fair
for two years in a row.
The 18-year-old has been show
ing for 10 to 11 years. Now that
she’s headed off to Matywood
University in Scranton, Laura
won’t be able to continue the day
to-day care of 50 head of pure
breed Hampshires, but will rely
upon her parents Kathy and Jeff
Segan to care for the flock on the
family’s New Tripoli farm. This
will enable her to continue show
ing at open shows.
Showing the reserve market
champion was Tim Rabenoid. The
13-year-old from Allentown
showed the market champion two
years ago.
He willingly shared that he
believes the secret is plenty of
exercise and taking his homebred
Dorset on long walks.
Of the reserve champion named
Jack, Tim said the win was an
astonishing surpise.
“I didn’t like him (Jack) at all. I
thought be was too fat,” Tim said.
After Judge Lee Wagner, a
Dorset breeder, selected Jack for
“lots of front muscle," Tim saw the
formerly despised Dorset in a new
light.
“He’s all right,” Tim said as he
patted the heavyweight lamb,
which also had been named
reserve in his class.
Competing for market lamb title
was the champion and reserve
middleweight market lambs
shown by Adam Rabenold.
At the Kutztown Fair, showman
and fitting competition is held
separately instead of combined as
in many shows. Champion show
man was Carrie Harman and the
reserve champion was Amanda
Miller. Champion fitting honors
went to Amy Wehr and the reserve
champion fitting ribbon to Aman
da Miller.

KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.)
After the breed champions were
selected and re-entered the show
ring for the final showdown to
determine the supreme champion
ewe and ram at the Kutztown Fair,
Jpdge Lee Wagner said that both
the ewe and the ram decision
boiled down to competition among
three breed champions.
“Those that deserve the most
recognition and are the most com
petitive today are the champions
from the Hampshire, Dorset, and
Southdown breeds,” Wagner said
of both the ewe and ram selection.
In the end, Wagner decided that
Amanda Miller’s Southdown
junior ram was most deserving for
the champion ram title. Wagner
said, “It’s extremely long bodied,
nice and level over the rump.”

Hartman,
the Southdown ram on the family's
farm. Since her father Ron Miller
has been well known in sheep
breeding circles for years, Amanda
has been showing sheep since she
was two years old. She has 15 head
of breeding sheep for which she
receives numerous awards.
The supreme champion breed
ing ewe was a Dorset shown by
Amy Wehr. Wagner compli
mented the Dorset for its tremend
ous size and acceptable head.
“The Dorset has a neat front
end, length of body that gives her
more ‘oomph’ when it comes to
bone. Her strong frame and neat
trim makes her a pretty ewe,”
Wagner said.
In the Dorset breed, Amy also
showed the reserve champion ewe
and the champion and reserve
champion ram.
“The buck is neat and clean with
its long trim over hind saddle. It
makes a neater-appearing sheep.”
The Hampshire champion ram
and ewe owned by Laura Segan
were both lauded as outstanding
for the breed. Wagner noted the
ram had a long top with some meat
on him.
