State Fair’s Most
Popular Horse Shows
Change Schedules
Maryland State Fair visitors
who previously had to wait until
the end of the state fair to watch
the draft hose and mule shows will
wait no more. The fair’s most
popular horse show has changed
time slots with the children's
horse and pony fitting and show
ing competition to become the
fust horse show during the fair.
This year, the Draft Horse and
Mule Show will begin in the
Horse Show Ring on the State
Fair’s Preview Night, Friday,
Aug. 28, 6:30 p.m. and will con
tinue on Opening Day, Saturday,
Aug. 29, at 9 a.m.
On Preview Night, Percheron,
Belgian, Clydesdale, and Shire
horses and mules, which weight
approximately 2,000 pounds each,
will pull single cart and four
wheel wagons. On Saturday
morning the “gentle giants" will
be judged on their conformation.
And in the afternoon, multiple
horse teams will pull show wag
ons. The teams will be judged on
their performance, conformation.
Twilight Meetings In Lititz, Lemoyne
On Selling Produce To Supermarkets
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Pennsylvania Farm Link and
the Pennsylvania Produce Project
of the Department of Agriculture
will sponsor two twilight meetings
for farmers who are interested in
learning about selling their pro
duce to supermarkets.
Farmers are invited to attend
twilight meetings beginning at 7
p.m. in the produce sections of
either Kams Quality Foods in the
West Shore Plaza or Oregon Dairy
Farm Market, Lititz.
On Sept. 8, Kams
Market will host the
meeting in their store
located in Lemoync.
Oregon Daily Market
located on Oregon Pike,
Lititz, will host the
meeting on Sept. 10.
Jim Hensel, produce
manager of Oregon
Dairy Farm Market, and
Doug Diffenderfer, pro
duce manager of Kams
Quality Market, will
discuss their experi
ences working directly
with fanners, their pre
ferences for quality pro
duce, and their “wish
list" of quantities and
packaging. Other
speakers include Jeffrey
Patton, coordinator of
the Pennsylvania Pro
duce Project, who will
discuss the project's ob
jectives and assistance
in finding buyers.

can feel the ground shake,” said
Maryland State Fair Horse and
Pony Department Assistant
Superintendent Bob Shirley.
The Children’s Fitting and
Showing Contests where children
ages 2-19 arc judged on how well
they groom and present their pon
ies, followed by the Equitation
Contests where riders ages 6-19
arc judged on their position, con
trol and maneuvering of the horses
will move to Saturday, Sept 5 be
ginning at 9 a.m. in the Horse
Show Ring.
The Horse Pulling Contest*
which draws one of the state fair’s
largest audiences, will remain on
the evenings of Saturday, Sept. 5
and Sunday, Sept. 6 prior to Labor
Day.
“There are a variety of horse
shows throughout the Fair, so no
matter what day fairgoers joins us,
they’ll see some of Maryland’s
marketing at Tuesday’s meeting.
And Tim Elkner, horticulture
agent with Lancaster Cooperative
Extension, will review marketing
aspects such as variety and stage
of harvest at Thursday’s meeting.
Farm Link Director Marion
Bowlan will talk about Farm Link
services and other marketing ses
sions sponsored by the non-profit
at both meetings.

Visitors Bureau Sponsored Agricultural Tour

Local folks and visitors alike
visited four farm sites during an
agricultural open house on Aug.

The Cambria County Ag Tour,
promoted by the Greater Johns
town/Cambria County Conven
tion and Visitors Bureau was free
of charge and open to the public.
The sites, located in the Loretto
and Cresson areas, offered the
public the opportunity to see ani
mals, tour the countryside, learn
more about the daily tasks in

Farm, Loretto; Criste Farm, Loret
to; Vale Wood Dairy, Loretto; and

stock and horse shows, midway

Fairgrounds in Baltimore County.

opens at 10 a.m. on weekends and

Visitors saw a mother pig and her
piglets, horses and colts, goats and
kids (baby goats), and commercial
feed cattle. Denny explained how
nutrition, housing, and health play
an important role in animal pro
duction and marketing.

produced while Vale Wood Farms
took visitors on a journey in the
daily life of a dairy cow. Af
terward. guests enjoyed a refresh
ing glass of cold milk.

which are purchased by Snyder of
Berlin to produce potato chips.
Visitors saw the machinery used
in maintaining fields, harvesting
crops, and storing potatoes. Penn
State University, the Snack Food
Assoication, and Snyder of Berlin
use a portion of the Hite’s proper
ty as a test plot to analyze weather
conditions, soil, and produce more
varieties of potatoes.
The tour was created by the
Convention and Visitors Bureau
to unite Pennsylvania’s top two
industries: agriculture and tour
ism. The tour attracted nearly SOO
participants last year.
