MANHEIM (Lancaster
Co.) Travis Donough of Man
heim on Wednesday showed the
grand champion market hog of the
Lancaster County 4-H market
swine club roundup and sale, held
at the Manheim Farm Show
grounds.
According to Chester Hughes,
county livestock agent, there were
a record number of entries in this
year’s swine roundup with 151
exhibited on foot and 49 entered in
the carcass competition.
However, there may well have
been some extra market swine
exhibited at the roundup that were
initially intended to be entered in
the annual 4-H Southeast Region
Market Hog Derby. Unfortunately,
the hog derby was allowed to slip
through the cracks tills year by
some of the county agents, through
a lack of promotion and communi
cation to potential participants.
Auctioneer for the sale was John
Stauffer.
Donough, son of Edward and
Laßue Donough, has been featured
in past years for showing champion
hogs and steer.
His 247-pound animal sold for
$1.60 per pound to Hatfield Qual
ity Meats.
The reserve grand champion of
the roundup was exhibited by first
year participant Lisa Hcrshey,
daughter of Les and Lois Hershey
of Kirkwood.
Her 227-pound animal sold for
90 cents per pound to Hatfield
Quality Meals.
According to Hughes, the sale
average was 55 cents per pound.
In showmanship competition,
Sheldon Hoover, son of Lloyd and
Elaine Hoover of Lcola was the
grand champion. It was his first
time to win the championship, and
his last year to participate. He said
he was grateful! to have won in
during his last year. As a 10-year
old he had showed the reserve
champion of the show, and was

himself, his family and gave a brief
history of the family farm, which is
operated by him, his wife, his
mother, and two children.
He said he relies heavily upon
the advice and professionalism of
consultants, and he doesn’t spend
much lime away from the farm,
taking a break from milking about
one day a year..
He doesn’t use milk production
stimulants, but occaisionally,
under tire advice of a veterinarian,
uses oxytocin, but not as an off
lable milk production enhancer.
However, he said he really
doesn’t have anything specific
against the use of bovine somatot
ropin, except that he feels that if
someone is looking to buy a high
producing animal from him, or
from a herd that uses BST as part
of its producton program, and both
herds produce about the same, he
feels the buyer may be more com
fortable purchasing an animal with
a production record based on non-
BST use.
The herd features a number of
quality animals, including one that
has been featured on a calendar of
an artificial insemination com
pany; a 2-year-old that has recently
made more than 40,000 pounds of
milk in a first lactation; and a cow
