4-Year-Old Is Grand At York Holstein Show
JOYCE BUPP
York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York Co.) Senior
champion, grand champion, best
bred and owned showered on the
homebred 4-year-old that won the
annual York County Holstein
Show, July 29 at the York Fair
grounds.
For show champion Dar-Dale
Skybuck Melissa and her owner
exhibitor Daphne Doll, the selec
tion by judge Eton Code made it
two-for-two, since the fancy, fra
mey cow had been named su
preme of the York 4-H show one
day earlier.
Melissa, a daughter of
Hanoverhill Skybuck and home
bred in the Doll family’s Dar-Dale
herd, is scored VG-87 with second
lactation records over 20,000
pounds of milk.
Daphne, 18, is the daughter of
Dale and Darla Doll, Glen Rock,
and the youngest of the four Doll
children who have exhibited the
family's cattle for many years at
regional Holstein shows. In late
August, she is to begin her fresh
man studies at Penn State in dairy
science.
Reserve senior and grand cham
pion was El-Dor B Drew Sonja,
the junior 3-year-old exhibited by
Beshore Farms, the Jed and Sue
Beshore family. New Cumber
land. Sonja, best-uddered animal
in the six-head class in her age
category, is sired by Hilltop-Han
over-B-Drew-ET and was bred by
Richard Crider, Chambersburg.
Junior champion honors went to
the first and second-placed sum
mer yearlings, both bred and ex
hibited by Coredale Holsteins, the
Rodman and Jane Thompson
family. East Berlin.
Earning the purple award was
Coredale Jed Simba, also named
the best junior animal bred and
owned for owners Rod and Jane
Thompson. Granddaughter Amy

the reserve junior winner Coredale
Mandel Franny.
Sunnybend Farms, York, own
ed by Tom and June Boyer,
claimed the pair of purple banners
honoring the show’s premier
breeder and exhibitor. Their ac
complishments to gamer high
points in both banner competitions
included first- and second-place
senior 2-year-olds, first senior
3-year-old, first 6-year-old, and
several second-placings.
The special Kiddie Klass for
very young exhibitors is a proven
favorite with the crowd each year
at the York Holstein show, and, as
always, drew enthusiastic ap
plause. This year’s winner was
Amanda Thompson, daughter of
Roy and Tammy Thompson,
Wellsville. Also competing were
Cameron Knight, Kyle Miller and
Aaron Doll.
“I tried to hold her head up and
I walked her every day,” were two
of the techniques the 6-year-old
Amanda explained for working
with her March-bom calf, named
Donita. Amanda celebrated her
seventh birthday two days later, so
the trophy and several awards
were an early birthday surprise for
the Kiddie Klass veteran.
